Purpose To advance the education, to promote the arts and to promote the benefit of the people of Derry and its environs (hereinafter called the ‘area of benefit’) by means of: (i) The provision of an art gallery facility to exhibit works of artistic merit in the area of benefit in an effort to develop visual arts, and to foster an awareness of
and a knowledge of the visual arts for the benefit of the general public; What benefit flows from this purpose? The provision of an art gallery facility to exhibit works of artistic merit, is the development of visual arts opportunities for artists, arts audiences, and general public in the Derry region. Can you demonstrate this? These benefits will be evidenced through the schedule of admission-free public visual arts exhibitions at Centre for Contemporary Art and the educational programmes that support these exhibitions, all of which are promoted to members of the public from the Derry region and beyond. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit? There is no harm. Purpose (ii) To provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure-time occupation of people in the area of benefit who are in need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, disability, or social or economic circumstances and in particular to: (a) encourage people (especially the young) to become actively involved in community-based arts activities, and provide appropriate training and educational facilities and services. What benefit flows from this purpose? To provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure-time occupation of people in the area of benefit … is the provision of such facilities for social welfare and leisure-time occupation through Centre for Contemporary Art’s year round programmes. Can you demonstrate this? These benefits will be evidenced through the audience figures of approximately 7000 per year, for exhibitions, educational events, and workshops. Many of these programmes are targeted to young people. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit? There is no harm. Purpose (iii) Encourage appreciation of the arts and stimulate the artistic creativity of people in the area of benefit by the provision of art exhibitions, performances, installations, training, support and facilities for artistic expression. What benefit flows from this purpose? To encourage appreciation of the arts and stimulate the artistic creativity of people in the area of benefit by the provision of art exhibitions, performances, installations, training, support and facilities for artistic expression, is the encouragement and stimulation of the general public, artists and arts audiences through the encounter of contemporary visual art. Can you demonstrate this? These benefits will be evidenced through repeat public attendance at exhibitions, attendance at events and workshops, as well as featured in the independent Visual Arts appraisal commissioned by Derry City Council in Spring 2014. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit? There is no harm. Purpose (iv) Present, promote, organise, manage and exhibit shows of artistic, cultural and educational value, including paintings, drawings, performances, sculptures, films, broadcasts, entertainments and exhibitions. What benefit flows from this purpose? The direct benefits which flow from purpose (iv) is in fostering new understandings of contemporary visual art to the widest possible public and to encourage the uses of art in bringing communities together. Can you demonstrate this? These benefits will be evidenced through repeat public attendance at exhibitions, attendance at events and workshops, as well as featured in the independent Visual Arts appraisal commissioned by Derry City Council in Spring 2014. The organisation is a public gallery space that devises, curates and delivers a year round programme of contemporary art exhibitions. Alongside these exhibitions, the organisation operates public engagement projects and educational activities that relate to the themes of the exhibition and exhibited artwork. The organisation also commissions new
work by emerging contemporary artists, and operates artist residencies to enable young artists to develop their artistic practice and career.
