Public benefits
The purpose of the Trust is to promote the charitable work for the time being carried on, promoted or supported by the members of the Society of Jesus, particularly by those working and living in Northern Ireland. This confers public benefit in the following ways: (a) The establishment of the Jesuit Communities in Portadown and Armagh, and their
continuing support by grants from JINI, permits (i) The promotion of religion and prayer, which promotes a moral framework and encourages people to live in peace with one another. (ii) Visitation of prisons, which has helped prisoners to be more at peace with themselves and to reintegrate into society. (iii) The pastoral care of immigrant communities, including facilitation of language learning, helps immigrants to be better integrated into the local community. Craigavon Borough Council has given the Outstanding Service Award to the migrant support worker sponsored by the Jesuit Community there. (iv) The support by the Jesuits of the work of SPRING, a community project in Armagh which organizes development courses for young people, particularly those affected by substance abuse. There are public benefits here in assisting young people to develop their potential, as well as a contribution to public order and safety. There is also the potential to give financial assistance to other community projects which confer a public benefit. (b) The support of mission projects gives people a sense of solidarity with those worse off, and promotes community development and education in poor areas of Africa and other poorer countries. (c) The maintenance and support of infirm and aged Jesuits, and the provision of holidays and rest for Jesuits permits the other works of public benefit to take place. The public benefits can be verified by letters, tokens and artefacts received expressing appreciation, as well as unsolicited verbal feedback on the work of the Jesuits. There is also an evaluation by the Jesuit Provincial Superior during his annual visitation of Communities and Associated works. The Trustees cannot identify any way in which the purposes of the charity may lead to harm. , The Charity’s beneficiaries are: (a) the members of Jesuit Communities committed to prayer and peace, by contributing to their maintenance and support; (b) the ordinary members of the public who benefit from the work of the Jesuit Communities through being assisted to live in peace with one another; (c) Prisoners in gaols visited by members of the Jesuit Communities by helping them to be more at peace with themselves and to reintegrate into society. (d) (through the help of JINI for certain community projects) Young people who are, or are in danger of becoming, addicted to drugs; and the wider community who suffer the impact of drug abuse in their family or local community. (e) Poor people in Africa or other mission countries who benefit from community development and education projects. (f) Immigrant communities assisted by Jesuit Communities supported by the Charity. These immigrants are assisted, by pastoral care and language learning, to be better integrated into their local community. The main possible private benefit flowing from the purpose is that from time to time a Jesuit in a community assisted by the Charity is a Trustee of JINI and benefits from funds given for maintenance of that Community. However this is incidental in that the benefit is not intended for the Trustee as such and no Community is maintained solely by the Charity’s funds. Trustees, and Staff and Volunteers who working for the projects assisted by the Charity, may benefit from the training and experience they receive but this is not an intended benefit.
