Public benefits
The Charity seeks to carry out its purpose by promoting and advancing the Catholic Religion in Newry and its surrounding areas. A direct Public Benefit flows from this to the Spiritual, Physical and Mental wellbeing of the Catholic and wider Communities in the area. The Purpose is supported and served by the Friars of the Dominican Fathers Newry
who conduct Religious services, such as masses, with a special emphasis on the promotion of Confession and Religious Education through Retreats, Novenas, Bible Meditation and specified Courses or Lectures. Benefits are available and provided to individuals, families, groups and the wider Community, and are evidenced by people having an enhanced mental and physical and spiritual wellbeing and stronger community commitment. The Charity’s purpose is facilitated by the buildings built and maintained by the Charity and is also facilitated by an “on line” presence – newrydominican.com - which broadcasts Church ceremonies over the radio or internet to those unable to attend the Church through age or infirmity and to those from the locality who now live abroad. There is also an extensive library of reading material available. The Charity’s Public Benefit is demonstrated through strong daily mass attendances and the many people participating in different prayer group forms and related social activities. Individual prayer is strongly supported and each day many people simply drop in to the Church or Chapel for a quiet moment’s prayer and reflection. Further evidence of the Charity’s importance in the locality is seen through the attendances and participation in other activities organized through the Charity including Retreats, Novenas, Bible Meditation, Blessed Sacrament adoration and lectures. The Charity also facilitates the Community through individual Religious ceremonies such as baptisms, marriages and funerals. The Charity’s Public Benefit is also demonstrated by the Fathers seeking to advance individual wellbeing by being available to anyone who may need moral support or comfort to deal with life’s difficulties or challenges whether suffering through bereavement, illness or misfortune or indeed with any issues of personal or family concern. Many people like to discuss such issues with the Fathers knowing that this will be in a welcoming and confidential environment. The importance of the Dominican Fathers locally is evident from the number people willing to volunteer their time and experience to the Charity. The Charity seeks to enhance the people and Communities of Newry and its hinterland by providing a foundation for life in Faith, thereby enhancing moral and physical lifestyles. Everyone in the area can obtain comfort and direction. An important aspect of the Charity comprises its ecumenical reach. This played an important role in the past troubled times and is as important today given the differing challenges modern Society brings. Involvement in cross religious groups and peace projects has helped achieve an important stability in the area and promote a better Community life to everyone’s benefit. A Charitable objective is fundamental within the Dominican Fathers Newry Charity. This is furthered through hospital and other Chaplaincies, parish apostolates and charitable activities. Each year the Dominican Fathers Newry makes significant donations to a variety of Charities and good causes locally and abroad. This includes holding a special collection each Monday for a nominated charity. The Charity helps shape a Community purpose through individual and group involvement in its activities and providing services to benefit the people of Newry. In this way there is an enhanced ideal in the areas which promotes a strong Community ethos both from Religious and behavioural aspects. The Charity provides strong faith leadership to the benefit of Community and the individual. Active involvement is to everyone’s benefit and it is not anticipated that involvement provides harmful benefit.
