Public benefits

The charity's beneficiaries are people living in the Whitecross area, and their environs in South Armagh who are suffering or have suffered as a result of the conflict in Northern Ireland. A private benefit to trustees may arise from our programme of ongoing training in good governance, finance etc. Through this training trustees gain skills

and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. The benefits which will flow from our group's purpose include improved heath outcomes and reduced levels of stress and anxiety. It will encourage victims and survivors to get involved as a community and so reduce isolation. These benefits will be evidenced through feedback from patients and regular independent evaluation of our services. There is no harm flowing from our group's purpose

What your organisation does

Our organisation has been in existence, informally, for 35 years working with all age groups and sections of the community to build community infrastructure and support to local people in a very rural area. Originally the group’s focus was victims and survivors of the Troubles who shared similar experiences of loss, bereavement and who needed

support, empathy and distraction from the effect of their losses. In latter years we have become a focal point and a hive of activity across the entire local parish area and beyond. We work with around 400 families from the main religious traditions here. We find out about issues that interest them or affect them and facilitate and deliver projects which: - meet their social, health and wellbeing, and mental needs - build their skills, capacity and interests - help reduce the sense of isolation felt and get them involved in the wider community - help them address the issues and experiences which have shaped their lives for many years We have never sought or secured funding to help us complete this work even though our projects, activities and support are all week and all year round; and are an essential service for people and an area which is suffering substantial distress.
