Public benefits

The purpose of the Association is to provide help and support to those people in the Causeway and surrounding area who have experienced, or who are currently experiencing, mental health problems. The direct benefit from this purpose will be improved mental health, reduced stress and an increased sense of wellbeing leading to empowerment of the

service user enabling them to take control of their lives. We intend to evidence this through ongoing monitoring and evaluation of each beneficiary of our service, and also through regular independent evaluations. 2.1 A mental health Peer Advocacy service will be offered to adults in the Causeway and surrounding area, without regard to gender, ability, disability, ethnic identity, nationality, religion or sexual orientation. Any adult with difficulties affecting their mental health in the Causeway and surrounding area can benefit from our service. We are non-discriminatory, non-judgmental and the only criteria for beneficiaries is the need for support due to mental ill health. 2.2 To promote the preservation of mental health through peer-support activities and the sharing of information conducive to good mental health. We will signpost clients to further relevant bodies who may be beneficial to their mental health situation. We will also advocate on the client's behalf if they feel unable to do so at that time. In addition to one to one advocacy, we intend to also offer group sessions giving shared support and understanding, whilst giving participants the opportunity to increase their confidence and sense of wellbeing. 2.3 To promote an understanding of mental illness in the wider community. As a group we are passionate about promoting a better understanding of mental illness, in order to change attitudes and stigma. Research shows that the best way to challenge these stereotypes is through first-hand contact with people with experience of mental health problems themselves - to this end we are very open about our own experiences through local press etc and intend to get involved with discussions on mental health legislation. There is no harm or private benefit flowing from the purposes.

What your organisation does

Bee Heard is an independent mental health charity organisation that is made up of people who have or have had experience of mental health issues and related problems. We are a volunteer led group that provides one to one peer advocacy for people suffering from a range of mental health problems. We listen, support and empower our clients to develop

their own coping skills and signpost them to other organisations, when necessary. When asked, we accompany clients to their GP or other appointments for support. We would also liaise with other professionals and families, if asked. No appointments are necessary.
