Public benefits

Purpose 1: The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is an increased knowledge and understanding by members, students of history at all levels and people generally of the area’s past, people and places. This benefit is evidenced through feedback from both members and interested parties, both at local, national and international levels, via

the Society’s website and from people who live abroad and are interested in researching their genealogical origins within the area. Participants have access to information through a recent local history publication “Along The Ravel and Clough Water” and history presentations and trips, with local and general themes and are encouraged to discuss the merits and relevance of same; positive criticism is welcomed by the Committee and will be acted upon in future planning and reporting. Committee members are encouraged to take on leading roles in the Society’s activities and members are also encouraged to take part in sub- committees for ad hoc purposes including specific projects within the local area eg. a current” Townlands Project”. This in turn contributes to personal development in that skills learnt are transferable to other life and study areas. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure future development of the Society. Purpose 2: The direct benefit which flows from this purpose include increased knowledge on the part of the recorders and the preservation of this knowledge, artefacts etc., for present and future generations. These benefits will be evidenced through feedback from members and again the public, as a result of activities undertaken and at meetings, both at general Society and committee levels and in the Secretary’s report at A. G. M. New information is recorded in the minutes of meetings and by individuals involved in research and artefacts are stored by the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Secretary for safe keeping and future reference. A private benefit to members may arise from our ongoing presentations, research etc. in that through these activities individuals gain skills and experiences which are transferable to other research areas eg. use of Public Library and PRONI facilities. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure information is available to our present and future beneficiaries. Purpose 3: The direct benefit which flows from this purpose will include social interaction, which is the opportunity to engage with people from different social and religious backgrounds with the aims of promoting greater understanding and empathy among them and doing so in a historically educational and culturally rich environment. These benefits will again be shown through feedback from participants and positive criticisms will be discussed at Committee and more general Society level and improvements implemented accordingly. There is a private benefit that arises from our programme, to our trustees in particular, in that through training in such culturally, educationally and historically rich activities, they gain skills and experience which is transferable to other areas of life. An example of this would be from courses and socially inclusive activities available for us from “umbrella groups” eg. The North Antrim Community Network and The Federation for Ulster Local Studies, of which we are members. This benefit is again necessary to ensure the future development and educational and cultural growth of our Society. There is no harm or possibility of harm arising from our purposes. The beneficiaries of all our purposes are local members of the Society and the public at large.

What your organisation does

Our Society was founded in August 2010 and it’s main objectives are to increase education and knowledge of the history, traditions and folklore of the Glenravel area by: a/ encouraging their study; b/ preserving and recording of historical knowledge and objects of historical interest; c/ educating the public socially and culturally through

activities undertaken. To these ends our Committee organises regular presentations on topics of local and more general historical interest, identifies topics for projects which can be explored involving both Committee and general membership and has an annual trip, usually in June, with an historical theme. Genealogical research is catered for through one of our founding members from America, who has done a lot of research into the origins of families from the area, and through contact with more senior local people. We have also in the past organised visits by members to neighbouring community groups and these have proved to be very interesting, both at a cultural, social and educational level. One highlight of our annual season, which runs from September/ October to June the following year, is our Christmas “Get Together” which has proved very popular with our members since our foundation.
