Public benefits

Purpose 1 Dundrum is a small service centre for its rural hinterland. Dundrum once relied on the EDS Co. Ltd as the mainstay of its economy. The closure of the harbour led to a decline and closure of retail and service outlets causing further recline, blight and poverty. The overall aims of Dundrum Development Association Ltd are to halt the

decline in the village. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are economic regeneration of the area which in turn will relieve poverty. These benefits are seen in the development of a derelict site and increase in the number of tourists. Purpose 2 The Project is located in a rural area which is designated disadvantaged. The site was derelict. It is a rural project which will provide employment and stimulate economic regeneration. The project is innovative in that a community group is providing the impetus for: • Employment creation • Increase in the number of tourists leading to higher tourist spend in the village • Village enhancement These benefits are seen in the development of a once derelict site. Purpose 3. Individual members of the committee are encouraged to help in: • Curriculum Vitae writing • Literacy skills • Support to unemployed people by way of assistance with travel and childcare facilities This purpose will be developed further by the association for the benefit of people of the area. Purpose 4. With bank loans paid off lump sums can be spent on: • Provision of capital grants or equipment to new businesses • Community projects • Provide advice and training to unemployed individuals concerning self-employment • Upgrading premises • Provide land and buildings at below market or subsidised rent Purpose 5 The primary aim to the project is to generate new economic activity in the village, thereby enhancing its potential for further development. With bank loans paid off surpluses can be spent on efforts: 1. To halt the economic decline of the village; 2. To address the under exploitation of Dundrum’s tourism potential; 3. To redevelop a prominent derelict site; 4. To enhance the appearance of the village; 5. To counteract the symptoms of disadvantage from a cross-community perspective. Purpose 6. The Association campaigns to local authorities and other bodies to encourage them to provide and improve housing in the area. Purpose 7 Plans for future include: 1. Assistance with proposed development of Greenbanks as an amenity area for the village. 2. Assistance with provision of annual outdoor Christmas Tree located at the site of the Core Project in the middle of the village. 3. Annual Christmas party for pensioners in the village. The benefits are for all the people of the area. 8.The preservation of buildings or sites of historic or architectural importance. Dundrum Development Association Ltd set up and managed the holiday homes project – regarded as the Core Project. What was a derelict site is now a sustainable tourism project giving an enhanced environment with long term stimulation for the village. Purpose 9. Facilities provide directly by the Association are: • Annual Christmas party for senior citizens of the village • Sponsorship e.g. The Great Dundrum Run Village Cricket Club Purpose 10 All of the endeavours of the Association will be with protection/ conservation of the area and its outstanding natural beauty.
