Public benefits

Good Morning Carrickfergus exists to offer a befriending service for older persons and vulnerable adults through the provision of a free telephone support facility and help to older people and vulnerable adults (with mental health, physical, sensory and/or learning disabilities) living in the Carrickfergus, Greenisland and Whitehead areas. With

centres in Carrickfergus and Larne, the premises provide a base for research, surveys, investigations, meetings, lectures, classes and exhibitions. The benefit which flows from this purpose includes seeking funding for the provision of social services, educational, environmental and recreational facilities and practical assistance for older persons and vulnerable adults to ensure that they are not left subject to the issue of social isolation and to improve their health, mental and physical and personal safety. The benefits are demonstrated through the volume of elderly and vulnerable persons who have benefited from reduced social isolation, increased safety and health benefits. The service checks daily on a client's health, well-being and safety has prevented those at risk from becoming more dependent, ill or falling into poor mental health and has increased knowledge and understanding to improve their health, well-being and safety. This is demonstrated through the continuous reduction in social isolation for older persons and vulnerable adults and through referring those in need of professional assistance to the relevant agencies who otherwise could go unnoticed. This is assessed through the continual evaluation and review of those assisted, feedback and assessing results achieved. The purpose does not lead to harm. The benefit is for the elderly and those vulnerable adults over 18 years of age within the Carrickfergus, Greenisland and Whitehead areas. The benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to all beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Good Morning Carrickfergus provides a free telephone befriending, support and alert service to older people and vulnerable adults, aged 18 and over, living in the Carrickfergus, Greenisland and Whitehead areas. The daily phone call checks a client's health and well-being, relieving isolation. Checks are made by volunteers regarding the client's

safety. If calls are not answered, this alerts that there may be issues which may need to be acted upon quickly. A wraparound service is provided targeting specific needs which are identified through the telephone call and Good Morning Carrickfergus will support clients with making or attending healthcare appointments, emergency shopping, emergency prescription collection, liaising with health & social care professionals and making onward referrals to other agencies. GMC provides social events and signposts clients to other social activities for those who are able to attend. GMC also undertakes home visits, supporting those who cannot leave their homes. The service also offers medication reminders to clients at the request of a relevant health & social care professional. GMC works within a community development approach, working in partnership with local statutory and community/voluntary services to provide a high quality service to the local population. We encourage social inclusion through provision of social activities and/or linking clients with local groups, initiating a social event programme supported with a free transport to and from our activities. Through our partnership with CAB, the clients have access to benefits checks and other advice as needed, we refer clients in need of emergency foods to local voluntary/community groups/food banks. Our service is delivered primarily by volunteers and is provided regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and religion.
