Public benefits

The trustees believe that our purposes satisfy the elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose one The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is that an extremely important part of our military and social history will be preserved intact within Northern Ireland for posterity. This benefit is demonstrated through all the feedback

from many of the thousands of people who have visited ‘War Years Remembered’ events throughout Northern Ireland since 1994. This benefit is also demonstrated by the many positive newspaper articles, reports and TV and radio interviews that there have been over the years involving ‘War Years Remembered’. There is very little risk of there ever being any harm involved in connection with this purpose and so therefore the benefit outweighs any minimal risk that might possibly exist. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the many members of the general public who will continue to enjoy all the ‘War Years Remembered’ events that are staged regularly throughout the whole of Northern Ireland and also all the school children who will continue to enjoy the ‘War Years Remembered’ exhibitions that come to their schools throughout Northern Ireland. Purpose two The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is that a large number of the general public and school children learn a great deal from ‘War Years Remembered’ events about Irish military and social history. This benefit is demonstrated through the feedback from many of the thousands of people who have visited the ‘War Years Remembered’ events throughout Northern Ireland since 1994 and also from the feedback from school children who have learned from the ‘War Years Remembered’ exhibitions that have come to their schools throughout Northern Ireland. This benefit is also demonstrated by the many positive newspaper articles, reports and TV and radio interviews that there have been over the years involving ‘War Years Remembered’. Safety at the ‘War Years Remembered’ events has been, and always will be, our number one top priority and, as a result, there is very little risk of there ever being any harm being involved in this purpose, which means that the benefit outweighs any minimal risk that might possibly exist. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the many thousands of members the general public who visit the ‘War Years Remembered’ events throughout Northern Ireland and also all the school children who learn a lot from the ‘War Years Remembered’ exhibitions that come to their schools throughout Northern Ireland. Purpose three Because of the non-sectarian and cross-community factor included in the ‘War Years Remembered’ philosophy, the direct benefit which flows from this purpose is that everyone from all backgrounds, nationalities, creeds and cultures is made to feel welcome at the ‘War Years Remembered’ events that are staged throughout ALL parts of Northern Ireland. This benefit is demonstrated through the feedback from many of the thousands of people who have visited the ‘War Years Remembered’ events throughout all parts of Northern Ireland since 1994. This benefit is also demonstrated by the many positive newspaper articles, reports and TV and radio interviews that there have been over the years involving ‘War Years Remembered’. There is very little risk of there ever being any harm involved in this purpose and so therefore the benefit outweighs any minimal risk that might possibly exist. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the many thousands of members of the general public who visit the ‘War Years Remembered’ events throughout Northern Ireland and also all the school children who enjoy the ‘War Years Remembered’ exhibitions that come to their schools throughout Northern Ireland. There is no private benefit whatsoever to the trustees, who provide their services on a purely voluntary basis.

What your organisation does

We raise money from various sources, including grants listed on the NICVA’s ‘Grant-Tracker’ site, donations, gifts, legacies, sponsorships etc. We use all monies raised to fund War Years Remembered events organised by us throughout Northern Ireland and to eventually acquire a suitable building for the War Years Remembered Museum. We closely

monitor the spending of all monies raised by the company to ensure that it is spent properly and in accordance with any conditions applied to the granting of that money. We have regard to the public benefit statutory guidance produced by the Charity Commission and WYR trustees are aware of it in particular in making decisions where the guidance is relevant.
