The primary purpose is to advance through education an appreciation and understanding of the history of the City of Lisburn, its culture and heritage, through regular monthly lectures, providing improved interpretative literature,publishing a society journal and the provision of a website. The benefits flowing directly from this purpose will be
the promotion of a greater interest and understanding of local history, culture and heritage and the factors which influenced the development of the local cultural, natural environment in which they exist. This benefit will be evidenced by an increase in the number of people accessing literature, visiting the area, attending exhibitions, workshops, lectures and by monitoring visits to the society website. This purpose will be achieved in through regular monthly lectures, providing improved interpretative literature, promoting the publication of articles of local interest and a society journal and the hosting of a website. The society will organise day visits to locations of historical interest and an annual field trip normally lasting 4 days, available to society members and the public. The beneficiaries will be the residents Lisburn, visitors and researchers wishing to develop a better appreciation and understanding of local history, culture and heritage. A further purpose will be to co-operate with other voluntary and public bodies to improve public awareness off and access to local artefacts, memorials and their built and natural environment by promoting the installation signage and interpretative boards at appropriate historical locations throughout Lisburn. This action will impove the public awareness of points of significant historical interest and their location, the times that public access is available and other sources of information. The beneficiaries of this will be Lisburn Museum, Irish Linen Centre and the historical places that open to the public and will be evidenced by an increase in the number of recorded visits to the locations. Private benefit will be achieved through the provision of signage and interpretative boards at appropriate historical locations throughout Lisburn.

The Society holds a regular series of lecture evenings from September to April each year.These are open to members and visitors, with speakers chosen to reflect a diverse range of subjects on local and national history. The active promotion of education through the publication of the Society Journal, the preparation and publication of literature on
local heritage and culture and the recent launch of a website. Additional activities include visits to local places and objects of historical interest and an annual study trip mainly in the Island of Ireland which is open to members, friends and any person with an interest in history, heritage and culture.
