Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from purpose one are as follows: • Members benefit from access to a creative and nurturing environment in which their talents as young musicians can be developed further. • Members receive consistently high standards of musical education by having leading conductors, performers and music teachers from around the
world give musical tuition, conduct masterclasses and workshops, and guide and oversee their orchestral experience. • Members are drawn from all the communities and cultural traditions in Northern Ireland and this diverse group develops mutual understanding and friendships through working together and sharing learning experiences. • Members attending UYO activities develop practical and social skills, boost their confidence, enhance their well-being and empower themselves to achieve excellence. The benefits of purpose one are demonstrated by the feedback which UYO receives from each beneficiary. Residential course/concerts assessment forms and feedback forms from Outreach Programmes are distributed to each participant. Completed assessment and feedback forms are reviewed by the Board of the UYO. Sample comments are published on the UYO website and Facebook page. Independent ACNI assessor reports and press reviews also demonstrate the benefits of this purpose. There is no harm from this purpose. The General Manager of the UYO follows good practice by producing a risk register which is monitored and approved by the UYO Risk Management Committee. Any potential risks for members of the Orchestra or staff are brought into safe bounds through risk assessments of rehearsal and concert venues which must conform to the highest standards of safety. The charity’s intended beneficiaries are the young musicians of Northern Ireland who have achieved a good standard of competence in their chosen instrument and are successful in competitive audition. There is no private benefit from purpose one. The direct benefits which flow from purpose two are as follows: • Concerts given by the Ulster Youth Orchestra help the development of new audiences and performance venues. • The UYO affords opportunities for Northern Irish composers/young musicians embarking on solo careers to showcase their work. • The UYO engages in artistic collaborations with existing and new partners whenever possible and practicable, to the mutual benefit of all parties, often facilitating the performance of large scale works what would otherwise be impossible. • The UYO’s profile as the National Youth Orchestra of Northern Ireland increases public awareness of the young musical talent in Northern Ireland. • The activities of the UYO contribute to Northern Ireland’s economic, health and wellbeing and educational goals by affording opportunities for young people and adults to have access to diverse regional music programmes and concerts. • Members have the opportunity to communicate their talents to the widest possible audience, acting as ambassadors for classical music across Northern Ireland, creating greater interest in various music genres. These benefits of purpose two are demonstrated by the audience feedback forms which are collected at the end of end UYO concerts, the enthusiastic response of appreciative audiences displayed in standing ovations in appreciation of the achievement of the members of the Orchestra, and the acclaim of concert critics which appears in Newspapers and cultural magazines and websites. There is no harm caused in purpose two. The beneficiaries in purpose two are the public of Northern Ireland who are educated in the Arts and Sciences of music through the musical programmes and projects provided by the UYO. UYO concerts develop new audiences and promote the use of concert venues, whether well-established or new, both locally and regionally. The only private benefit is to the members of the UYO Board who receive complimentary tickets for UYO concerts.

In the absence of a music college in Northern Ireland, UYO provides a third level musical experience for its members, affording the opportunity to study and perform symphonic repertoire at a level beyond that which is provided by the five area education and library board music services. UYO provides consistently high standards of musical
education by having leading conductors, performers and music teachers from around the world give musical tuition, conduct masterclasses and workshops, and guide and oversee the orchestral experience. UYO recruits the most talented, young musicians – whether or not they intend to pursue a career in music – and ensures access for all by providing bursaries for those who lack the economic means to participate. UYO ensures that members are drawn from all the communities and cultural traditions in Northern Ireland, and to help this diverse group develop mutual understanding and friendships through working together and sharing learning experiences. UYO gives members the opportunity to communicate their talents to the widest possible audience, acting as ambassadors for classical music within Ulster and beyond. UYO enriches the social and cultural life of Northern Ireland by giving young composers the opportunity to develop new work and have it publicly performed. UYO gives public performances in major venues across Northern Ireland, often performing large scale orchestral works which audiences may only rarely have a chance to hear.
