Public benefits
The primary aim of the Museum is to preserve the industrial heritage local to the Benburb area, including the building of Orr's Mill (Listed) and the machinery dating from 1845 in situ and educate the public by interpretation of this heritage. It is also the curatorial policy to accept donations of machinery, at risk, which relates to the complete
linen cloth production from scutching to weaving and finishing. Admission is free and open to the public by appointment. As part of the Benburb Valley Heritage Trail and the Ulster Way the toilet and washroom facilities are open to the public by arrangement. the Museum provides an educational service to schools and research opportunities to engineering students at Queen's University Belfast. We provide, free of charge, the use of the site for public broadcasting. The Trustees encourage the study of water power/steam power and alternative technology, in particular Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and two energy demonstration schemes are in situ, open to the public and grant-aided by the EC Energy Demonstration Found (the turbine of this site is dated 1908). The Ulster Canal which is to be restored runs through the site and the 11th Lock (a scheduled monument) on the system has been restored by the Museum with the assistance of volunteers working under the direction of the Waterways Recovery Group and the tow path will form part of the Ulster Way open to the public. There is no possibility of "harm" as we are custodians of a listed building. There is no possibility of private benefit as there is no trading and no paid employees. Museum exists through voluntary effort.
