Public benefits
The direct benefits from purpose a) are that it delivers mediation conciliation and reconciliation of disputes, the understanding of the nature and causes of disputes or conflicts and of all the means of managing them for the purposes of peaceful resolution in the interests of good cititzenship. Thus Diversity Challenges is providing a benefit to
society by working with culturally specific groups across Ireland to develop a more peace society. The direct benefit from purpose b are the promotion of good citizenship, an understanding of cultural diversity and elimination of social exclusion discrimination within the area of benefit. We can demonstrate the public benefit from the direct engagement work undertaken with culturally specific groups. Thus for Diversity Challenges to undertake its work there has to be engagement by the culturally specific groups. They undertake programmes of work with Diversity Challenges that result in them undertaking change. For example the latest project Green and Blue Across the thin line involved former police officers from the Garda and RUC developing an ethical story-telling project. This project is designed to provide healing to the storytellers and to engage with others telling stories from differing backgrounds to increase understanding and healing of the conflict in and about Northern Ireland. In this programme we collected 48 stories from former police officers and their families. Diversity Challenges assesses the risks associated with our work, part of that risk assessment is to ensure that potential harms are recognised and mitigated against and benefits accentuated. Our most recent programme of work is a story-telling project dealing with the past conflict. The storytelling process has been designed on ethical principles so that the process provides Beneficence to the participants, is carried out with dignity and justice. Those undertaking the work have been trained on an OCN NI accredited course to ensure professional standards. The direct beneficiaries are the members of the culturally specific groups that engage with Diversity Challenges and work on our programmes to bring about change to a more peaceful society. The recent programme of storytelling with former members of the RUC and Garda and their families benefited those former members and their families. It also benefited others from this background and others impacted by the conflict in and about Northern Ireland that they are able to learn of stories from differing backgrounds and how the conflict impacted on different people in a safe and non –threatening way. The only private benefit may be incidental in that Trustees may learn skills in the processes and projects undertaken by Diversity Challenges. There is no other private benefit.
