Public benefits

Purpose 1: To advance the education of the public in aviation history, heritage and culture in Ireland by: i. the establishment and maintenance of an aviation museum for the collection, preservation, conservation, restoration, explanation, interpretation, and display of artefacts, memorabilia, maps, historical records, books, photographs and other

documents; ii. the organising of meetings, lectures, classes, exhibitions and other forms of education and enlightenment. The direct benefits, which flow from this purpose, include improved public knowledge of Sir Ernest Shackleton, RAF Ballykelly, and the Battle of the Atlantic etc. and an overall improved access to educational resources on the history, culture and heritage of aviation in Ireland. Purpose 2: To promote the value of cultural activity and motivate people at local level to protect and conserve our cultural heritage. The direct benefits, which flow from this purpose, include the improved conservation of items of cultural and heritage value such as films, documents etc. and a greater cross-community interest in matters of mutual cultural value. Purpose 3: To promote such other charitable purposes as may from time to time be determined. All or any future activities carried out under this general charitable purpose will be for the public benefit. The above benefits are variously evidenced through records of attendance at activities such as talks and digital presentations, feedback from local beneficiaries and independent evaluations of our activities. The purposes do not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries of the purposes primarily are those living nearby within Ballykelly, Limavady and Magilligan but are open to the whole community interested in the activities of The Shackleton and Aviation Museum. There are no private benefits arising from this purpose. All talks and visit to the museum are free of charge but the organisation takes donations which are recorded. Members wishing to buy the three published magazines a year are charged £12 per year including package and postage. All souvenirs and magazines sold to the public are recorded. The trustees are satisfied that no beneficiary is excluded due to fees.

What your organisation does

To show through various types of types of exhibits and media aviation as seen at Ballykelly airfield in past, present and future formats as follows Exhibits Models showing ballykelly as an airfield and associated aircraft and units that where based there. Digital presentations of irish aviation history at schools and youth clubs and old peoples

clubs.Three magazines of our rich aviation history sold to members and the public. Exibit models that show how airpower is being used in todays battlefield and the importance of helicopters and transport to substain this. To show the future of aviation and air power -ie Unmanned air vehicles new technologies in aviation and how to develope a career in this field. To show various types of exibits and media,aviation as seen throughout Northern Ireland as a whole province and again across the ages.

Charitable purposes

The Charity’s objects (‘the Objects’) are to:- (a) Advance the education of the public in aviation history, heritage and culture in Ireland by: (i) The establishment and maintenance of an aviation museum for the collection, preservation, conservation, restoration, explanation, interpretation and display of artefact, memorabilia, maps, historical records, books, photographs and other documents; (ii) The organisation of meetings, lectures, classes, exhibitions and other forms of education and enlightenment (b) Promote the value of cultural activity and motivate people at local level to protect and conserve their cultural heritage (c) Promote such other charitable purposes as may from time to time be determined.
