Public benefits
Public Benefit Element Purposes The Charity's purposes are these: 1. The relief of poverty and hardship among children living in such parts of the world. 2. By the provision of a. Education b. Health c. Food d. Shelter What benefits flow from these purposes? 1. Children who are poor and suffering hardship through deprivation and neglect will be
provided with goods and services that they would not otherwise be able to afford, or which would be denied to them by the absence of competent and responsible adults with access to the necessary resources. 2. Children who are the beneficiaries of the charity may receive the following goods and services as appropriate to their age, development, and individual needs: a. Support for access to education appropriate to their needs, so increasing their knowledge, skills and abilities. b. Support for access to health care, so reducing the risk of disease. c. Nutritious food, so strengthening body and mind. d. Improved accommodation, so increasing their safety, comfort and sense of security. Can you demonstrate this? Presently we are supporting the work of Mihlali Children's Haven in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This is a family-centred haven for children who have been orphaned, and those from backgrounds of abuse, abandonment or neglect. Working hand in hand with the South African Department of Social Development, the haven welcomes, loves and cares for each child until they are safely established in a family or other place of long term care. We will provide evidence of benefit by reporting each year on the number of children accepted into the haven and the numbers established in a family or other place of long-term care. We will also report on how the charity has improved the educational, health, nutrition and housing condition of each cohort of children. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit? We do not anticipate any harms arising from our work. Who is the benefit for? The charity’s beneficiaries are children needing relief from poverty and hardship. Is there any private benefit? No.

Presently we are supporting the work of Mihlali Children's Haven in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This is a family-centred haven for children who have been orphaned, and those from backgrounds of abuse, abandonment or neglect. Working hand in hand with the South African Department of Social Development, the haven welcomes, loves and cares for each
child until they are safely established in a family or other place of long term care. In this way we are consistent with the advice provided by the Charity Commission Northern Ireland in that we 'provide for the care and upbringing of children or young people deprived of the opportunity to be looked after or brought up by a competent person.' We also support Starfish Soul Care, a project that provides physical, emotional and spiritual rest, support and nurture for foster and adoptive families based in Northern Ireland.
