The intended aim is to improve knowledge of health, animal welfare and environmental pollution all of which would be to the general public
benefit. This is demonstrated through the advancement of education and IT with particular reference to the Pig Industry in Northern Ireland generated from work supported by the Charity. The assessment of the response to the activities of the charity in achieving its Public benefit Statement is derived from the following: 1. Reports from the scientific research bodies to which financial assistance is given, such as AFBI. 2. Reports from Field Officers of CAFRE who visit producer farms and factories. 3. Slaughter-house surveys conducted by PigRegen Ltd on a regular basis collecting data on the general health of animals being presented for use in the human food supply chain. All this information is archived and comparisons made on a time basis, reports are generated and issued directly to all members as well as in the general industry and public media. Public Benefit provided by Pig ReGen is the NI Public & beyond. The activities of Pig ReGen are not harmful in any way. The only indirect benefit which the trustee/directors may gain is the experience in exercising good governance over Pig ReGen & the appliance of any research results which may contribute the improvement of their pig production process.

Education: Electronic circulation of relevant international research; publication of Pig Regen supported research by AFBI and CAFRE; seminars outlining the work carried out by Pig Regen; publication of a booklet posted to all pig producers in NI on factors affecting Feed Efficiency, helping support a progressive and competitive industry employing
around 4,000 people in NI. Health: Factory surveys carried out annually on approx 45,000 pigs to determine the level of various diseases on pig farms, some of which have direct bearing on human health, results made available throughout the industry; a research programme, financed by Pig Regen with support from DARD, into Salmonella on NI Pig Farms was completed, results had an important impact on procedures pre/post slaughter with the result of reducing Salmonella risk at retail level; co-operation with the veterinary section of AFBI, specifically in a PhD project investigating Pleurisy and its effects on performance criteria and welfare of animals on NI Pig Units, this project is in its first of a three year programme; active with UFU, IFA(RoI) and DARD in trying to establish an All-Ireland health programme – it is anticipated that it will have far reaching effects in improving the health and welfare of pigs throughout the island of Ireland. Research: Closely involved with AFBI, Hillsborough, through research topics mainly directed at the viability, welfare and productivity of piglets produced by modern hyper-prolific sows, the main thrust of this research is to reduce mortality in the immediate post-farrowing and weaning period; research was carried out into the reduction of gaseous emissions, particularly ammonia, from pig slurry and will reduce environmental pollution and risk to operatives. Animal Welfare: Acted in cooperation with AFBI in investigating the problem of tail-biting, the apparent necessity of physical removal of part of the piglets’ tails at birth and its implication for animal welfare.
