Public benefits

Caleb House Trust (“the Trust”) seeks to benefit children who are in need of assistance as a result of their poverty or social and economic circumstances resident at Fundatia Casa Kaleb (Caleb House Foundation) in Romania. The Trust’s purposes (the relief of poverty, the advancement of education and the promotion, preservation and protection of

health) are dealt with below. • The relief of poverty and those in need The direct benefit flowing from the Trust’s poverty relief work is the provision of safe and secure supported residential accommodation (Caleb House). Without such support, it is likely that many of the beneficiaries would be unable to access sheltered accommodation of an equivalent standard. This would compromise their future development and care. The Trust also subsidizes meals for children attending the House, ensuring that adequate daily nutrition is provided. This has associated benefits through improved health and diet. The benefits are demonstrated through monthly reports detailing the numbers of children supported. • The advancement of education The direct benefit flowing from the Trust’s educational work is evidenced through the subsidisation of school and higher education fees for children resident in Fundatia Casa Kaleb. This enables children to remain in education and allows them to access appropriate vocational training. This access to education and vocational capacity building offers improved opportunities for career and personal development. This allows for improvements in physical, mental and emotional abilities and also leads to improvements in skills, self-esteem and self-confidence. This assists in the development of children and young people as they transition into adulthood and teaches them the life skills they will require when they are ready to live independently. The benefits are demonstrated through monthly reports detailing the numbers of children supported. • The promotion, preservation and protection of health The direct benefit flowing from the Trust’s health promotion work is access to appropriate healthcare facilities and medication as and when required. It is submitted that access to medical treatment radically eases suffering and improves quality of life. The Trust also subsidises counselling in order to help young people to deal with issues that may have occurred during their time in residential care. This helps them to cope with the effects of life in the Romanian care system. The benefits are demonstrated through monthly reports detailing the numbers of children supported. Access to the Trust’s projects is provided on a free of charge basis. It is not perceived that harm arises from the Trust’s activities. There are no private benefits arising from the activities of the Trust in Romania beyond the payment of salaries for support staff. Such payments are considered incidental to the achievement of the purposes. In considering private benefit, there are no payments made to the Trustees. The private benefits received as a consequence of any transferrable governance or managerial skills are considered incidental to the pursuit of the purposes.
