Public benefits

1. The Advancement of Education The intended beneficiaries of the educational work of the Trust are children and young people under the age of 18 in Kuriftu and Babogaya, Oromo District, Ethiopia attending Whitewell School. Currently, 692 children are intending the School with a further 177 due to commence education in September. The Trust

finances Whitewell School by way of child sponsorship. In considering the benefits flowing from the advancement of education, it is submitted that pupils, who are affected by severe poverty and as a consequence, malnutrition and disease, are offered improved access to education and can achieve an improved quality of life. Children attending the school are provided with a daily nutritious meal, high quality education, school uniform and shoes and any necessary medical care. This has a profound impact upon the children through improved personal development and access to education. The Trust also provides vocational training in animal husbandry and agriculture enabling the beneficiaries to meet their own needs now and in future. In considering the harm that may flow from this purpose, there is no charge or expense to children or their parents in attending Whitewell School with the costs of staff salaries and catering costs being met by the Trust. It is not perceived that harm flows from these activities. There are no private benefits arising from the activities of the Trust in its educational activities beyond the payment of salaries to teachers and support staff in Ethiopia. 2. The Promotion of the Christian Faith In considering the remaining objects of the Trust these are connected with the activities of Whitewell School. Whilst the primary beneficiaries of the work of the Trust are those children and young people under the age of 18 in Kuriftu and Babogaya, Oromo District, Ethiopia attending Whitewell School, they should not be considered to be an exclusive class of beneficiaries as the Trust’s work also expands beyond that of the School. The Trust seeks to promote Christianity through the provision of preaching, the distribution of Christian literature, evangelism and biblically based teaching, discipleship training, and bible studies. In demonstrating the benefits that flow from the promotion of the Christian faith, it is submitted that the promotion of faith provides moral improvements in society. The trustees are of the opinion that the preaching and teaching of the gospel enables the salvation of all people and enables people to know hope and peace. In considering the harm that may flow from the promotion of the Christian faith, the Trust does not engage in evangelical activities that are perceived to be harmful or which act as coercive practices. Access to the services of the Trust is not predicated on conversion to the Christian faith with the Trust serving many children and people of both Christian and Islamic faith. There are no private benefits arising from the Trust’s religious activities. 3. The Prevention and Relief of Poverty, Suffering and Distress and the Promotion, Preservation and Protection of Health In considering the intended beneficiaries of the work of the Trust, the Trust seeks to benefit people in Kuriftu and Babogaya, Oromo District, Ethiopia who are affected by severe poverty, malnutrition and ill health. The Trust provides free medical care to children attending Whitewell School and where possible provides support to family members of children attending the School. The Trust operates a medical clinic staffed by a doctor and three nurses. Access to free medical care enables the beneficiaries to have improved quality of life and improved life expectancy. It is not considered that harm arises from this work, with access to healthcare being provided free of charge. There are no private benefits arising from the Trust’s health care work beyond the payment of salaries to the doctor and nurse staff team. These payments are incidental
