Benefits that flow from the purposes of Vela Microboards: Individuals avail of an individual planning process that involves a wider circle of carers, family and friends. This results in an agreed plan that totally focus’ on the individual and uniquely the commitment of a wider circle of family and friends, thus ensuring that the individual has

the best quality of life. Individual people who have established a vela microboard also benefit through their needs and wishes being taken into account at all times. The establishment of a vela microboard, while focusing on the needs and wishes of an individual, results in that individuals family and friends also benefiting. The support that is provided to the main carer by having a vela microboard reduces their stress and anxiety, thus enabling them to also live a better quality of life. We hold networking events for everyone who is involved in vela microboards which give individuals, their carers, family and friends an opportunity to meet and share their stories. Vela Microboards NI Ltd provide a free and independent range of services to anyone living in Northern Ireland and wishing to establish a vela microboard for which there is no charge. Demonstrating the benefits: In general, the feedback from people involved in a vela microboard has been positive. An early evaluation of the impact of a vela microboard highlighted a wide range of benefits, such as: Support on an ongoing basis by Vela staff to check on progress the offer support. Families report that they would not have made as much progress without the support of their vela microboard. A range of goals being pursued to meet an individual’s expressed needs. A particular individual was reported to be more independent, happier, had more opportunities to socialise and was meeting people that he would not previously had the opportunity to meet. One family said “as the parents of a severely autistic child, we have found the vela microboard to have been an inspiration to us in terms of focus, confidence and breadth of experience to put in place, following consultation with a multi-discipline team of professionals, a Person Centred Care Plan, to greatly enhance the quality of our son’s life”. Feedback from our networking events is demonstrated by people who are willing to share the way in which their vela microboard has improved their lives and their families lives. Further benefits of having a vela microboard can be seen in the DVD’s that individuals participated in, which illustrate the benefits of establishing a vela microboard. Many of these video clips are available to be viewed on the Vela Microboards Ni Ltd website. Vela Microboards NI Ltd have been successful in achieving targets and objectives set by the Health and Social Care Board. The Health and Social Care Board have recognised the benefits provided to individuals, their family and friends by our organisation. Possibility of harm: To the best of our knowledge, no harm has ever come to anyone through the system of support that Vela Microboards NI Ltd provides. The benefits are open to the public. Private benefit: There is no private benefit to anyone working for or sitting on the Board of Vela Microboards NI Ltd, other than the payment of employees and incidental expenses.

What your organisation does

Vela Microboards NI Ltd assists individuals to set up a unique system of support called a vela microboard. A vela microboard is a group of family and friends who help a disabled or ill person plan for a better future. It can include help with important decisions, financial matters or organising every day tasks .The organisation gives further

assistance to identify the needs of the individual by facilitating a person centred plan. This plans show the members of the microboard how they can best achieve as good a quality of life as possible for the individual they are supporting. Vela Microboards NI Ltd continues to offer further assistance and support for all established vela microboards on an ongoing basis.

Charitable purposes

4. The charity’s objects (‘Objects’) are specifically restricted to the following: The objects of the charity shall be to relieve and support adults and children in Northern Ireland with life debilitating conditions or who are disabled to : ● Support the creation and development of Microboards around an individual with a person-centred approach. ● Support the development of skills and confidence in areas of advocacy and self determination through mentoring and coaching. ● Help an individual Microboard to secure social services, practical assistance, funding and facilitate planning. ● Provide advice, training and education opportunities, information and networking events appropriate to an individual person, their family, friends and carers.
