Public benefits

Kabosh strongly believes that theatre has the power to transform lives and can play a key role in cultural and social regeneration. Over recent years Kabosh has become the leading theatre company in the north of Ireland working within conflict resolution, presenting difficult narratives in a range of spaces for diverse gatherings of citizens. The

company strives to produce original narratives that challenge pre-conceived ideas and assist with informed debate exploring sensitive subject matter, an example of the wider benefit that Kabosh has through aiming to nurture a healthy, proactive society. The direct benefits which flow from our organisation’s purpose include creating both exciting and enjoyable theatre for the general public, whilst capturing and celebrating different cultures within Northern Ireland. Our charity focuses on the advancement of the arts, culture and heritage. Our performances often derive from a moment in Northern Irish history, whether it be marking an anniversary or taking inspiration from stories or individuals, therefore enhancing the public’s understanding of NI history. Kabosh is a site-specific theatre company and so our audience are often introduced to buildings or areas of NI that they wouldn’t ordinarily set foot in. Those who directly benefit from Kabosh’s work are first and foremost the audience themselves. Kabosh regularly encourages audience feedback through social media and post-show feedback forms. This enables Kabosh to continue producing theatre that appeals to large numbers and remains popular and current. As well as audience members direct beneficiaries include the hundreds of professionals whom Kabosh work with throughout the year, in 2013 this number was in excess of 270, including actors, designers, technicians, historians, photographers etc. Due to the nature of our work we are often working within the community, although our primary purpose is not community engagement there are many groups who benefit indirectly from our projects due to their subject, whether they be ex-prisoners, socially marginalised communities or homeless groups. As one of NI’s longest standing theatre companies indirect beneficiaries often include those who learn from Kabosh’s experiences. Examples of this include regular young people placed on work experience with Kabosh, PHD students shadowing members of staff or interviewing the Artistic Director, sharing resources with other companies, contributing to and informing local government through surveys, reviews and consultations, contributing to conferences and academic papers. There are no benefits within Kabosh’s work that would lead to any harm. There are also no private beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Kabosh is an independent theatre company focused on creating exciting theatre in interesting places using the history, stories and buildings of Northern Ireland as its inspiration. It is the only theatre company in Northern Ireland that produces site-specific theatre. Founded in 1994, the company constantly strives to push boundaries of live

theatre performance, to cultivate partnerships with arts practitioners and create new environments for performance. Kabosh believes in the power of theatre to transform lives. The company firmly believes that arts, theatre in particular, has a key role to play in the cultural and social regeneration of Northern Ireland. Kabosh uses artists from a variety of genres to create high quality cultural product for the stimulation of citizens and visitors alike. Kabosh is a registered Charity, run by a board of trustees. The board meet quarterly and are involved in the day to day decision making of the company, as well as the longer term strategic decisions. The company is run by the Artistic Director, who oversees and manages the company profile and its core staff: a General Manager and Production Assistant. Freelance production staff are managed by the Artistic Director, with line management support from the General Manager.
