Public benefits

Public Benefit Flowing from our purpose statement, the benefits which accrue include: - enhanced teaching and learning skills in art education for a section of the primary and post primary school teaching force in Northern Ireland - the development of improved learning experiences and outcomes for children and young people up to the age of

seventeen years. The outcomes are achieved via the provision of grants that enable teachers to attend courses that focus on the development of teaching and learning in art education. The benefits noted above can be demonstrated as follows; - teacher attendance at related courses are high and places invariably are oversubscribed, on occasions by some 40% - the evaluation returns from attending teachers are always positive and the teachers say that the courses provide them with direction for ongoing and future development - on return to their schools, the teachers report that they cascade their learning to their peers within the school staff thereby enhancing the impact of their learning to the benefit of a broader range of pupils. Evidence of the newly acquired skills can be found in the improved scope and quality of the children and young people’s art work, for example, by way of the displays of their work in classrooms and corridors in schools. In addition evidence can be seen through the exhibitions of pupils art work in the annual regional exhibition of work by the local Examination council at GCSE and GCE levels. It is the firm view of the board of trustees that no harm flows from our purpose statement or its outworkings. The benefits are provided for a section of the Northern Ireland teaching force at primary and post primary levels and as a consequence there is improved learning experiences and outcomes in art education for the children and young people they teach. There is no private benefit flowing from the purpose statement to any of the individuals involved in the McCord Bursary.

What your organisation does

The McCord Charity has run three activities over the years, although not necessarily all every year. A Summer school workshop lasting two days in August for teachers of art with the help of the Ulster Museum, the Belfast Education & Library Board and the Regional Training Unit (RTU) of the Department of Education. The RTU recruit 30

professionals to attend after advertising the course to all teachers in Northern Ireland. The summer school is free to the professionals attending who give up part of their summer holidays to attend. An evaluation of the summer school is carried out at its conclusion. An annual lecture presented by an eminent speaker in the Art World which is open to all teachers, students and the general public. It is held in the Ulster Museum who advertises the lecture which is also promoted by RTU and the Association for Art and Design Education (AADE). Normally 100+ attend free of charge. Individual bursaries have been awarded to teachers, to enable them to pursue a specialist interest. The successful recipients have to make a report to the trustees on how their students, school and the wider art world has benefited.
