Public benefits

The work of the society brings various important educational benefits to the citizens of Belfast and region. Through lectures, publications and exhibitions we help to create a greater public knowledge of our heritage in the arts, sciences, history and literature. These benefits are measured through annual reports, sales of publications and numbers

attending our lectures. Through our lectures and lectures new research on our core interests are made available to the public. In addition we have strong links with other partners in the voluntary heritage and arts world and we make our premises available for their work. We provide a meeting place in down-town Belfast for the discussion of important matters relating to our historical and cultural heritage. Another public benefit we bring is our ownership of a grade A listed building we seek to preserve for the citizens of Belfast. no private benefit flows from our purposes, no harm flows from our purposes, and the beneficiaries are the general public.

What your organisation does

At present our society holds a series of 8 lectures annually. We sponsor publication of books relating to the history and culture of Belfast. We have ambitious plans to extend the work of the society to include additional lectures, exhibitions and conferences. Our premises, The Old Museum Building in College Square North, require considerable work

to restore the building and to provide it with full disabled access. When this work is complete it will then be suitable to host events for additional societies, community and civic groups.
