Public benefits

The trustees believe that both our purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. The purposes are as follows-: 1. To advance the education of the public in genealogy, family-history and cultural heritage of counties Tyrone and Fermanagh through the provision of an information and research service. 2. To promote the work of

local history societies within counties Tyrone and Fermanagh through advice, research and, where practicable, financial assistance. Purpose one The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include an increased understanding of individual family backgrounds, and a better appreciation of the complexities of history, culture and traditions, both ancestral and contemporary. These benefits are demonstrated via feedback from people who have availed of our services. Typically this comprises questionnaires to elicit the value and usefulness of clients' experience of the service/course/product and their impression of the delivery of the service. We do not perceive that there is any harm arising from this purpose. The beneficiaries are any members of the public, both within Ireland and abroad, seeking to explore their ancestral roots in counties Tyrone/Fermanagh, or who are interested in pursuing their interest in the wider culture and history of these counties. A slight incidental private benefit to a trustee may arise from the printing of occasional brochures or stationery necessary for the proper discharge of this purpose. Purpose two The direct benefits flowing from this purpose are an increased ability by local groups to engage in the work of documenting and publicising aspects of the history of their own areas, and also an increased understanding among local people of their work. The principal means of demonstration will be by evaluation and feedback forms. In cases where Irish World has made a grant to a local group, these will demonstrate how our input assisted the group and the value of our service and/or assistance to the outcomes of the group. We do not perceive that there is any harm arising from this purpose. The beneficiaries are members of local history societies within Tyrone/Fermanagh engaged on furthering understanding of, and interest in, their local area's history and culture. There is no perceived private benefit, incidental or necessary, arising from this purpose.

What your organisation does

Irish World offers a genealogy and roots-tracing service to anyone with ancestors from Tyrone and Fermanagh counties - and, where possible, others parts of Ulster. The company has amassed a database of some 2 million Irish family-history records comprising baptisms/births, marriages, burials, gravestone inscriptions, land records and census data.

We add to and update our data-sources as and when possible. The records pertain mostly to Ulster, and more specifically to counties Tyrone and Fermanagh. We answer queries and assist the research of anyone across the world seeking information on their Ulster antecedents. This work involves dealing with queries by telephone, letter, e-mail and personal visits to our office and display-centre in Coalisland, Co Tyrone. Irish World is committed to the advancement of all aspects of research into, and study of, Irish genealogy, especially as these relate to Tyrone and Fermanagh. We are also involved in widening public interest in, and knowledge of, the relevant sources of information on roots-tracing. In addition to purely genealogical information, we are also concerned with the promotion of related ancillary interests. These include-: local history the celebration of local place-names and a sense of place local dialect, including the etymology and usage of local words and phrases local folklore, including folk-remedies and charms family names and heraldic images We work with local history societies and associated groups in helping to promote all these areas of interest, including attending exhibitions and promotional events in Ireland, UK and USA. We have also produced a number of publications to promote and celebrate the foregoing aspects of local culture. In keeping with its original purposes, Irish World works to nurture and encourage a sense of pride in their ancestral homeland among people of Ulster and Irish descent wherever they might reside.
