Public benefits

To promote and develop relevant courses for the inhabitants of the area which would allow them to take up seasonal work within the Mourne Lodge. We have provided such courses as health and Safety, Child Protection, Food Hygiene and the World Host course. We also train our young people to meet and greet guests, also in general housekeeping in order

to take opportunities within the Mourne Lodge. We have provided opportunities for work and experience for those in the area who are long term employed. We work closely with the Jobs and Benefits centre to develop self esteem. We encourage them to take part in re-training to take any opportunities for work. We give our young local university students opportunities for a paid placement within the centre, most of which is related to tourism. Students work closely with all the voluntary and statutory agencies, take part in the many courses, enhance their skills and enable them to take up employment in the area of tourism or related fields. We work tirelessly for cross-community activities in the local Newry and Mourne area and encourage our young people to be part of the process. Provide opportunities for the elderly to meet other senior citizens groups from other areas for fun afternoons with music and dance. All of this can reduce rural isolation and support for the elderly. Breakfasts are offered for our local senior citizens at a reduced rate. The centre can be used for get togethers and meetings for our senior citizens. We developed courses and training for our eco-tourism award. We have gone from bronze to silver and then to Gold. This work is ongoing. We have developed a ‘leave no trace’ policy for all our locals and guests. We encourage our local community to support and take part in all the activities which are provided to clean up the area, for example, litter clean days, cycle days, walk to work, bird watching, star gazing etc. We also work closely with the Newry, Mourne and Down district council and the Mourne Heritage Trust in order to protect and preserve our environment. Our young people have developed the centre and allowed us to obtain many of our most recent awards. We have improved the educational opportunities for the local community and allowed them to take up jobs within the local area of Kilkeel and Atticall. We have an increase in bookings due to the quality of our young people involved in the project. We always have many young people enquiring to take up opportunities within the centre. Some of these will come as volunteers initially and then be eligible for work. These are the local community, the senior citizens of the area who meet up with other senior citizens groups within the centre from time to time. Is there any harm or potential for harm as a result of the purposes being carried out? With the increased visitor numbers in the Mournes there is a potential risk for damage to the environment. However, we have a ‘leave no trace’ policy and we have obtained our Gold Green Tourism Award and this information is clearly displayed for our guests. With this we encourage guests to bring bicycles or use the ones which we provide free as a way of cutting down on carbon emissions. We have a partnership with Translink and encourage our guests to leave the car at home and use the local buses. Our young people and local citizens who have all been trained in the Green Tourism award promote a healthy and safe environment for visitors and locals alike. Does anyone gain a private benefit as a result of the purposes being carried out? No one in this organisation gains any private benefit from these purposes.
