Public benefits

The benefits that flow from this purpose include provision of a safe recreational facility in the Centre of Cookstown which can be accessed by young people, elderly and people with disabilities. Users are also provided with a welfare rights service which ensures that they receive benefits and assistance which they are entitled to and in doing so

help improve their standard of living and quality of life. Users are also supported in developing social and communication skills which assist them in having a more independent life and ensure full integration into wider society. Our interventions also have a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional outcomes for all users, allowing people to lead a healthy and positive lifestyle which can assist them in full and independent living. Our work also ensures that the needs of all users, particularly those with learning disabilities, is made known to other stakeholders including community and voluntary organisations and statutory agencies. This ultimately ensures a more effective approach between all stakeholders in ensuring that the needs of people with learning disabilities are fully met. Carers and family members of people with learning difficulties also benefit from our work by being supported in their caring role and by providing practical and emotional support to them at all times. We also provide a space in which volunteers (of all ages) can play a positive role in supporting the various strands of work we do. These are important opportunities for volunteers and they can develop a range of practical, caring and social skills which can contribute to their own personal and professional development. All of our work can be demonstrated by feedback from all users. We provide regular opportunities for users to articulate feedback on all aspects of what we do. The positive impact of specific interventions such as our own on people with learning difficulties is well documented by publicly available research and can be reinforced through internal evaluation of our own work. We also work with carers and other family members to ascertain the impact of our work. This can be looking at the benefits enjoyed by carers and family members but also based on observations of any positive change enjoyed by people with learning difficulties. The benefits of our work are also evidenced by support for our charity by both family and wider community support at fund raising events, open day events and our various recreational activities. We create a number of volunteer opportunities in which people of all ages are supported in making a positive contribution to the work of the charity. These volunteer opportunities are all recorded and their learning documented for evaluation purposes. Where users are working in a live working environment there will always be health & safety risks. These are mitigated by a number of measures to protect them & strict supervision at all times. The benefits strongly outweigh the possibility of harms. The primary beneficiaries of our work are young people and adults with learning disabilities living within the Cookstown, Magherafelt and Dungannon Council areas. We sometimes extend beyond this to include other marginalised sections of the public such as older people and carers, again within the area outlined above. There is no private benefit which flows from this purpose. We have identified only an incidental benefit which is where Trustees and volunteers are provided with training opportunities in terms of governance, project management and fundraising. This may have positive benefits for the personal and professional development of trustees and volunteers. This is however critical to their role within the charity and ultimately benefits the users of our service. - Additional Text available by contacting Charity Commission for Northern Ireland -

What your organisation does

The main purpose of Superstars is to provide care, support, fun and friendship in a safe environment, whilst giving people with learning disabilities the opportunity to experience new challenges and learn new skills. The club has always been ambitious in its aims. Initially we offered activities like football, crafts, snooker and pool, with a

sensory quiet area provided along with board games and music. As we progressed, we began to offer a wide range of computers, games consoles and popular TV and DVD areas. Our larger premises allow us to offer a dedicated sensory and quiet area, as well as great kitchen facilities for baking and cooking activities, and areas for workshops and crafts. A room for darts and table football with a social corner has been a recent addition as well as a room set aside for members with more challenging needs. Music, craft and art workshops always prove popular, and we regularly bring in talented tutors and individuals to share their skills and ideas with our members. We also have a well-established ten-pin bowling club that meets in the local leisure centre every week.
