Public benefits

For those who wish to attend aTo promote the study and encourage public interest in the history of local area. The benefit that flows from this purpose would be to our beneficiaries of our group, and other interested parties would learn their local history; this would encourage and promote an understanding to all the views of all sectors in their

community and beyond. We would also encourage children to learn their local history from early age and this would support and advance their understanding of local history and how that has affected their present and future. We would also increase awareness and understanding of religious beliefs and how this has affected our history and future. We would promote the teaching of local history in schools, colleges and other learning institutions. We would support and assist other historical groups and the Federation of Ulster Local Studies within the area of benefit in their promotion of local and factual history. We would arrange and assist in organising meetings, lectures, and exhibitions. This is demonstrated by having a growing membership and working in partnership with other societies throughout Northern Ireland The benefits are for our members and for other historical and interested parties and pupils in local education establishments. This is evident by our ongoing talks for our increasing membership and our participating role in other local groups. To record and preserve the history of the area The Benefit which flow from this purpose would be the beneficiaries of our local groups would learn more about local environment though books and exhibitions. To keep a detailed record of our findings, for future generations and to hold exhibitions this would also be learning tool. We would promote and carry out and assist in promoting research and publish the results via the internet to reach a larger audience. . The results would be publish in reports, periodicals, recordings, books and internet . This is demonstrated by expansion of our collection of objects of historical interest which can be viewed by other historical societies, schools and interested bodies by internet. No harm results from this purpose The benefits are for our members and for other historical and interested parties This is evident by local and regional coverage in local papers and our Local Historian which is published half yearly. Also this is demonstrated by having more links with local community and having more local participation To highlight preserve and restore the sites of historical interest in the area. The Benefit which flow from this purpose would be to increase public interest in our older/listed buildings and local individuals associated with the buildings, which would promote pride in our local neighbourhood. .To ensure memories and artefacts are retained to enrich the lives of all and be the inspiration of future generations. Also to encourage people to provide financial and voluntary aid. To visit and to provide speakers on the history of the older/listed buildings and the families who were associated with them. By visiting listed buildings which are at risk will highlight their need and promote interest to preserve history at all cost This is demonstrated by a greater public knowledge of the buildings and sites which are under threat, which need to be preserved within our local area and beyond. . No harm results from this purpose The benefits are for our members and other historical parties to have a greater knowledge. The residents of the grand houses and listed buildings may have enhanced support from more people who have gained knowledge about their difficulty in preserving the buildings This is evident by the number of speakers and outings to local sites of historical interest; this can be shown by joint activities with other groups and organisations which help to preserve historical sites i.e. The Whitehouse

What your organisation does

Our established activities are to enhance our members understanding of past history and therefore have a better understanding of events of today. By our members visiting different sites and historical buildings and inportant landmarks and giving donations to these, the money helps to preserve for further generations and educates our members.

Charitable purposes

The Society is established to advance public education in Newtownabbey and the surrounding area (hereinafter referred to as the "area of benefit") and in particular to: (a) promote the study of and encourage public interest in the history of the area of benefit; (b) to record and preserve the local history of the area of benefit; (c) to highlight, preseve and restore the sites of historical interest in the area of benefit and in particular the 'bawn' known as The White House, Newtownabbey.
