Public benefits

The trustees believe that this purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement. The direct benefit which currently flows from this purpose is the preservation of the listed building - the Old School – which is one of the first buildings to be constructed above the early town, which contributes to the visual appearance of Church

Road and which has made a big contribution to education and young people in Holywood. This benefit is evidenced through the restoration and continued maintenance of the Old School building. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the residents of Holywood and visitors to the town who can enjoy contribution the building makes to the visual appearance of that part of Church Road (which is within the Conservation Area), enjoy the appeal of the exterior and interior of the building and the contribution it makes to an appreciation of the heritage of Holywood, and avail of the facility the building provides for a wide variety of community activities in Holywood. The Trustees believe that there is no harm flowing from this purpose and that any unintended benefit for the building's ultimate owners is incidental and only that necessary to achieve this public benefit.

What your organisation does

Having restored the Old School building, Holywood Old School Preservation Trust now maintains the building, and makes it available for a wide variety of community activities for which there is a shortage of other suitable premises. To enhance visitors' appreciation of the built heritage of Holywood, the Trust also maintains in the main room of the

Old School a time-line display illustrating key surviving buildings and structures from different periods of town’s history from the 12th Century to the present day.
