Purpose The purpose is to apply funds for the benefit of those attending a place of education, namely the Union Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and for the benefit of specified beneficiaries within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. This purpose is expressed in the Scheme of Management of the John Carey Charity approved
by the High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland on 28th April 1980 when it was declared that the assets were held upon valid charitable trusts. Benefit The direct benefits which flow from the purpose are the easing of financial burdens upon those providing and receiving education through the Union Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the specified beneficiaries within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Evidence of Benefits The benefits will be evidenced by the delivery of lectures and attendance of students at the Union Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the receipts issued by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland in respect of the specified beneficiaries. Harm The purposes of the charity will not lead to any harm. Beneficiaries Lecturers and students of the Union Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland which provides training for those intending to enter the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the specified beneficiaries within the Presbyterian church in Ireland, namely the Overseas Board of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Home and Colonial Church Extension Scheme of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Home Mission of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the Presbyterian Orphan Society of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Private Benefit A private benefit flows from the purpose in the form of a nominal salary for the trustees and the supervising members of the Union Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. This benefit is in accordance with the terms of the Scheme of Management approved by the High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland.
