Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from the purpose include the provision of group meetings and other events or visits which are of educational benefit, improved learning, sharing and group discussion helping to improve health and become education of the harmful effects of long- term substance abuse, helping to remove the stigma of substance abuse so as
to allow members to increase in confidence and to re-engage with society, helping to resolve family issues and relationships which generally flow from substance abuse. Further direct benefits include the maintenance and support of healthier lifestyles and decreasing the levels of substance abuse and the maintenance of a platform where substance users can feel a social responsibility again and through their collective knowledge and experience, share experiences with the public and help to educate others about the process of recovery for better health. The direct benefits can be demonstrated through the success of the group, members’ feedback and public speaking. Some members can complete ‘Recovery Coaching’ through the Northern Trust and other programmes. Further, testimony to our work and our close collaboration with other groups evidences the benefits. There are no harms arising from the purposes. The beneficiaries are persons adversely affected by substance use and there are no private benefits to unintended beneficiaries.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
We assist members to meet weekly in a neutral environment,to discuss issues that they face on a daily basis ,due to their addiction, and to help support one another in their recovery. We do this by educating ourselves ,on health and related issues so that we have a greater understanding of the effects of addictions and we look for ways to
consolidate recovery. We build in a social aspect so that the members are given a chance to develop their confidence and their interpersonal skills. In August 2016 we were graciously awarded The Queens Award for Voluntary Services.
