Public benefits

Our primary purpose is the saving of lives and advances of public health. We also contribute to the relief of those in ill health and the disadvantaged. We directly benefit the public through our crisis intervention suicide prevention programme. We directly save people's lives and offer those in distress a listening ear. We indirectly help the

families of those we directly help by preventing their loved one from completing suicide. We provide a wider benefit to the community by making our city a safer place, reducing the suicide figures and therefore making our City a more pleasant and attractive place. These benefits are measured by our statistics, showing the amount of lives we save and the amount of people we help. We help all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, religion, race or status. Our organisation does not create any harm at all and we do not charge for our service. We provide in excess of 20 educational talks per year about our suicide prevention work and water safety to schools, workplaces and community groups. We provide these educational talks at our base and also at groups own premises. Our Educational presentations are adapted accordingly to the audience and we feel that this prevention area of our work is invaluable in making both young and older people aware of the issues of suicide within our city and how to stay safe along waterways. There is no actual or potential private benefit to people connected with organisation.

What your organisation does

Foyle Search and Rescue is a volunteer run suicide prevention charity who operate in the North West of Ireland. Our aim is to reduce the number of people who die through drowning in the River Foyle - one of the coldest and fastest flowing rivers in Europe. -We patrol the River at identified peak times of need in jeeps, boats and on foot. Our teams

of volunteers provide a listening ear to those who are distressed and actively rescue people from the railings surrounding the river, the 3 bridges and directly from the water. -We have an Emergency Response Pager Team, made up of 8 dedicated volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for incidents and emergencies outside of patrol times. -We train local people to become volunteers to carry out the above work and engage with suicidal people and their families. -We promote water safety to local schools and community groups. -We provide support to families who have lost a loved one by maintaining close contact throughout searches, offering the families a listening ear and by facilitating the North West Bereaved by Suicide Support Group.
