Public benefits

The direct benefit which flow from our purposes includes enabling older people to engage and deal with the bureaucracy associated with the public sector, particularly in the fields of health and welfare, improving the outcomes for them; enabling older and often vulnerable and isolated people to sustain viable independent living in their own homes;

enabling older people, singly and in groups, to lead more active and fulfilled lives through association, both formally and informally, and providing opportunities to access education, crafts and hobbies; enabling older people to avoid accidental and intended harm through our ‘Safety of Seniors’ programme, leading to reduced demand on the Health Service, the Fire and Rescue Service and the PSNI; enabling older people to be physically and mentally more active, leading to the enjoyment of better health overall and reduced demand on the Health Service; enabling those living in physical isolation to become more integrated and involved in their local communities. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from our beneficiaries and government reports and statistics. There is no harm flowing from our purposes. Our beneficiaries are people over 50 resident in the North Down and Ards areas. There is some incidental benefit but these occur as a result of the way we deliver the purposes to the intended beneficiaries. We have from time to time permanent and ad hoc volunteers who are younger than the target age group we serve. These younger volunteers derive a level of benefit in their own lives due to serving the interests of the older generation. We are involved from time to time in intergenerational activities, where schoolchildren benefit from interaction with older people, particularly their tales of former times, and the older generation benefit from the interest and enthusiasm of the younger generation. We also have occasionally young adults on placements – people with learning difficulties who carry out clerical tasks or work as volunteers under supervision and students on placements as relevant parts of their courses who work as volunteers under supervision; in both cases they are receiving incidental benefits. These are all incidental as they are necessary to provide the benefit to our beneficiaries.
