Public benefits
Public Benefit 1) The benefit of supporting those with a learning disability is to provide our members with increased confidence and to provide respite for their families. This is evidenced by member and family feedback and participation in club activities. Our beneficiaries are young people with learning disabilities in the Carrickfergus area and
their immediate families. A private benefit to volunteers of increased skills and employment opportunities will arise due to training programmes that we provide to our volunteers so they can effectively support our members. 2) The provision of recreation activities allows for increased social opportunities for our members with the aim of increasing their life skills leading to an increased capacity for independent living. This is evidenced by feedback from members and family and in reports compiled for the NEELB and Mencap as required. Our beneficiaries are young people with learning disabilities in the Carrickfergus area. A private benefit to volunteers of increased skills and employment opportunities will arise due to training programmes that we provide to our volunteers so they can effectively provide opportunities for our members.

Carrick Junior Gateway provides social and educational opportunities for young people aged 7-30 with learning disabilities within the Carrickfergus area. We provide a range of activities and projects including sports and recreation, arts and crafts, cultural, identity, self-esteem, education and welfare; to improve the life skills and opportunities
of our members. We provide opportunities for volunteers to upskill and gain experience working with people with people with learning disabilities. The training we provide to them on a hands on basis enhances their confidence and employment opportunities. For our parents we offer vital respite provision as well as a support network linking them to the wider Mencap organisation. Through our links to other local organisations such as the NEELB we have the ability to signpost our members into mainstream opportunities and to educate practitioners.
