Public benefits
The first purpose of Bóthar is to relieve poverty and to promote the preservation of health of people anywhere in the world. The direct benefits of relieving poverty are improved health, financial sustainability, increased access to education, and improved housing. These benefits will be evidenced through reporting from beneficiaries in developing
world and project inspections to Bóthar. There is no harm or possibility of harm outweighing this benefit. Bóthar's beneficiaries are people living in rural areas in the developing world. The only private benefit showing from this purpose is Bóthar staff (on occasion) travel to countries in the developing world, this is an incidental benefit as it is necessary to travel to enable thorough inspection of the projects. No harm outweighs this benefit. The second purpose of Bóthar is to relieve poverty and hunger in the area of benefit and in particular the provision of grants and training to enable poor people to establish and maintain projects which will enable them to relieve their own poverty. The direct benefit that flows from this purpose includes reduction in soil erosion, increased crop yield, increased food for beneficiaries. The evidence for this purpose will be through reporting from beneficiaries in developing world and project inspections by Bóthar's staff and partners. The land and the beneficiaries of the first purpose will benefit from this purpose. No harm outweighs this benefit. The third purpose for Bóthar is to educate the public in Northern Ireland about global poverty and its causes. The direct benefit from this is the public will have an increased knowledge of global poverty. The indirect benefit will be increased donations to Bóthar for the projects in the developing world. This will be evidenced through donor surveys demonstrating their knowledge about global poverty. No harm outweighs this benefit. A private benefit to staff, trustees and volunteers may arise from ongoing training in public speaking and presentation skills. Through this training staff, trustees and volunteers gain skills and experiences which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
Bóthar gives families in the developing world the gift of livestock, with this the families are able to help themselves out of poverty through the sale of milk, cheese, eggs and honey. Bóthar trains the families in how to look after their animal and trains the familiy in sustainable farming methods to ensure that the land is kept up to standard.
Over time the beneficaries of the gift of livestock become donors to the next family in need.
