Purpose 1 – To provide opportunities for young people to learn to sail and row traditional boats, seamanship, and all associated matters relating to the sea The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: • Increased knowledge relating to sailing, rowing for young people living in Northern Ireland. • Increased appreciation of the
benefits of teamwork for young people living in Northern Ireland and increased understanding of how to work as a team. • Increased self-esteem and inspiration for young people living in Northern Ireland. Purpose 2 – To engender cross community relations within the local area The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: • Increased opportunities for young people living in Northern Ireland from different communities to meet in a neutral environment, forge friendships and work together as part of a team. • Increased knowledge and awareness of young people, from different communities and backgrounds, living within Northern Ireland through friendship and organised sail training activity. • Increased appreciation of the benefits of teamwork with all young people and understanding of how to work as a team with the selection of young people involved. • Increased personal confidence, self-esteem and inspiration for young people in Northern Ireland. Purpose 3 – To encourage the personal development of young people through the medium of the sea The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: • Increased opportunities for young people to develop independence, leadership skills and inter-personal skills • Increased personal confidence, self-esteem through learning new skills, and building relationships with fellow crew members. • Increase understanding and awareness of personal responsibility in respect to looking after the other participants, the sailing equipment and the individuals own personal belongings. Purpose 4 – To support and encourage young people to apply for and compete in the bi-annual International Atlantic Challenge Contests of Seamanship, other associated competitions and events The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: • Increased opportunity to develop confidence and interpersonal skills from interaction with international competitors. • Increased cultural and regional awareness and mutual understanding from travelling to a foreign country or different regions in the UK as a team, living and training together as a team, and the interaction and friendships made with the other international competitors during the event. • Heighted enthusiasm to continue involvement with Atlantic Challenge and willingness to assist in attracting and training crew members. These benefits are evidenced by weekly training and appraisal of the young people that form our crew by our qualified instructors. Regular feedback is also provided from our crew, and their parents at regular events throughout each year. In respect of the above, we do not believe there are any private benefits arising, nor any harm arising from same.

We provide regular (weekly) sailing and rowing for young people aged under 18 yrs old. We use wooden boats (called 'gigs'), which take up to 20 people on board and teach the crew how to sail, row and maintain wooden boats.
