Public benefits
The purpose of the organisation is to advance community development for the benefit of the inhabitants of Eglinton and district areas. There are direct benefits flowing from our community development purpose. By meeting with the PSNI to discuss matters such as increased police presence and the implementation of a Rural Community Warden scheme,
there is a greater sense of security experienced by the residents of Eglinton and the surrounding areas. By providing a modern and safe play park in the middle of the village for children, there is an increased level of activity in the village. The circulation of a regular Community Newssheet will increase the awareness of local matters and upcoming events with local residents, and will increase the availability of useful information to all sections of the community including local clubs, churches and other organisations. By organising events for those of retirement age or over in the local community such as providing transport and holding a ‘Golden Years’ afternoon party, there is increased social inclusion among older people. The holding of public meetings and seminars on issues such as drugs awareness, healthy living, alcohol abuse, suicide awareness, home safety, road safety and safe cycling bring greater knowledge and awareness of such important issues within the local village. There is improved appearance and enhanced visual image of the area through ensuring links are maintained with Derry City Council, Roads Service and Housing Executive regarding the maintenance and upkeep of their respective areas of control. The provision of adequate lighting in parts of the village has also greatly diminished the incidence of low level anti social behaviour. These benefits are capable of being demonstrated from the well attended public meetings and seminars the Community Forum holds to discuss important local issues. Benefits are also demonstrated by the high level of attendance at the local play park which was created and the overall increase in services available to the local community. Benefits are further demonstrated from the feedback received by local residents on the general improvements made to the local area. The beneficiaries of the organisation are the local residents of Eglinton and surrounding areas. Public meetings and other facilities are open to all without restriction. The trustees are unaware of any harm which may flow from the above purpose. The trustees are unaware of any private benefit flowing from the above purpose.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
The Association pursues its objectives by (among other things) holding public meetings on specific topics (such as drug awareness, alcohol abuse, safety in the home, "stranger danger" etc) inviting suitably qualified guest speakers to address them. It also holds such events locally as Cycling safety events for school children, a farm safety event,
an annual free party for the elderly in our community. It also engages with, for example, the P.S.N.I about such matters as road safety, petty crime, anti-social behaviour and so forth. A member of the board normally attends meetings of the Police and Community Safety Partnership and the P.S.N.I. are normally asked once a year to address a public meeting in the village on the issues facing policing in the neighbourhood. It has also engaged on several occasions with the Roads Service where appropriate to voice concerns about local road safety issues, usually with positive outcomes.
