Public benefits

The Public Benefit Requirement Mums for Mums (Ireland) was set up to raise funds and channel support to the projects run by Mums for Mums which is an indigenous NGO which seeks to help vulnerable women who are living in destitution in the northern part of Tigray province in Ethiopia. Mums for Mums has a number of centres all over Tigray province

but the central organisation is in Mekelle where there is a vocational centre for younger women, a crèche for the children and also a day centre for elderly ladies which is the only one of its kind in the whole of Tigray. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: • The provision of vocational training in dressmaking, embroidery, pattern making, knitting, baking and soon training in the making of pottery • Training in nutrition and food preparation with emphasis on the use of sweet potatoes and cactus. • Building of knowledge and awareness of HIV/Aids and to provide a free confidential testing service as well as counselling • The provision of counselling services related to reproductive health and family planning. • The provision of home based care for families of HIV/Aids sufferers to supplement the meagre health care facilities available • The provision of start- up capital as a revolving fund for those women who wish to set up their own businesses. In relation to the KCCE (Kate Community Centre for the Elderly) the services provided include: • Sanitation and advice on hygiene • Medical care and advice on caring for relatives • Physiotherapy • Daily hot meal • Advice and support related to personal problems • Financial support where necessary • Opportunities for social interaction and engagement in a variety of activities. These benefits are evidenced through regular publications and newsletters and through regular feedback visits to the project which are self-financed by volunteers. There is no harm. There are no private benefits

What your organisation does

Our organisation seeks mainly to raise funds for Mums for Mums in Ethiopia to enable the services described above to be provided . We see ourselves as partners with the organisation in Ethiopia and there is regular contact through email and as a result of regular visits to the project which are self financed. Most recently we raised funds for the

purchase of a minibus for Mums for Mums which enables elderly ladies who live too far away from the Kate Community Centre for the elderly to be transported to the centre. This money was raised mainly from local Soroptimist Clubs who have been kept informed of the progress of the project through regular presentations and the Soroptimist logo is now proudly displayed on the side of the minibus.
