What your organisation does

The Newry Maritime Association carries out the following: We promote and carry out research, surveys and investigations and publish the useful results relating to local Maritime heritage. We organise or assist in organising meetings, training, seminars, training programmes, lectures, classes, workshops and exhibitions, and publish or assist

in publishing reports, periodicals, recordings, books or other documents or information. We recruit and train volunteers with relevant skills to carry out the objects of the Association. We work in association with local and statutory authorities and bodies and voluntary organisations engaged in the furtherance of our objects in the area of benefit. We establish and support, co-operate with, join or amalgamate with any charitable trusts, associations or institutions formed for all or any of our objects.

Charitable purposes

The Association is established to advance education and promote maritime and nautical heritage and culture and to promote the benefit of the inhabitants (hereinafter called the “beneficiaries”) of Newry and its surrounding environs within Northern Ireland and County Louth, Republic of Ireland in particular but not exclusively (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, by associating the statutory authorities, community and voluntary organisations and the inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and in particular: (a) to advance education and encourage appreciation within the area of benefit on all matters relating to Newry's local maritime, shipping and nautical history, heritage, traditions and culture through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, talks, demonstrations and other forms of educational mediums for the benefit of the beneficiaries; (b) to promote and/or carry out research into local maritime, shipping and nautical history by collecting and recording information on all aspects of local folklore and history and to publish the useful results of such research; (c) to promote for the public benefit features of the waterways, canals, features and other property of maritime, shipping and nautical historical interest or beauty in the area of benefit or land that is worthy of conservation by reason of its historic value and the encouragement of access and study of such waterways, canals, features and other property; (d) to collect, collate and archive documents or other materials (in whatever medium) of educational, cultural and/or historic value or significance which shall be made available in the public domain and promoting the perusal and use of such material for research and educational purposes; (e) to advance any other exclusively charitable purpose relating to the promotion of local maritime heritage as the Committee, may from time to time, decide in accordance with the law of charity.
