Public benefits

Friends of Belfast Hospital School will provide programmes and activities to support the emotional and social development of young people aged between the ages of 4-18 who have been referred to the Belfast Hospital School. Whilst the educational provision will be provided by BHS the Friends of Belfast Hospital School will complement this provision

by supporting social and emotional activities such as residentials, after school activities, therapeutic provision and enhanced educational opportunities. Support will also be given to the parents of the children and young people providing guidance and support on managing their child's medical or mental health related issues. The need to provide additional support and services is critical to help the children and young people overcome social isolation, fear, trauma and lack of self-esteem. Opportunities to socialise and engage in a range of extra curricular activities will improve their mental health, confidence and social skills. In addition therapeutic support such as cognitive behavioural therapy which will improve their resilience and mental health. Parents will become more involved through their involvement in parenting programmes which will increase their understanding, awareness and their skills enabling them to support and manage their child more effectively. Their involvement should strengthen child/parent bonds, improve relationships and reduce the stress within the home. We will record the numbers of children and young people who are able to manage phased returns to their mainstream school. We will seek feedback from parents and staff on the child's emotional well-being. We will encourage the children to provide feedback after activities to determine the effectiveness of the events. The children and young people's progress will be monitored. Our services will be provided to the children and young people who are in-patients at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, the City Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital. In addition the service will also be provided to those children who for a variety of medical and mental health reasons are receiving home tuition through the Belfast Hospital School. Also children and young people who have been referred to the Belfast Hospital School with acute anxiety based school refusal. The only private benefit flowing from our purposes are the increased skills of the teaching staff and assistants who will be encouraged to avail of training courses to enhance the range of strategies and techniques. The children and young people will be the direct beneficiaries of these new skills.
