Public benefits

The relief of those in need by reason of disability and other disadvantages Adults with learning disabilities are socially included, empowered to make their own choices, to live more independently, and participate fully as equal citizens in society. The Club provides social and educational activities for adults with learning disabilities who

otherwise would find it difficult to find suitable opportunities to socialise and gain new skills and who are likely to suffer from social exclusion. These benefits are demonstrated that adults with learning disabilities through activities at the Club develop their interpersonal skills, increase their confidence and self esteem and their ability and confidence to make their own choices and live independently. For example, the Club enables people with learning disabilities to gain confident travelling independently and to access resources and services available in the wider community. Advancement of citizenship Adults with learning disabilities are empowered to take part in society, make their own decisions and participate as equal citizens. The advancement of education Adults with learning disabilities are educated and gain new skills. The benefits are demonstareted through the opportunities provided for adults with learning disabilities to learn new skills by organising a diverse range of classes including classes to learn crafts, gardening and life skills such as managing your money and on health related matters. The Club also arranges visits to places of interest in the community, empowering people with learning disabilities to assess mainstream educational resources such as libraries. There is no harm flowing from the purposes. The charities beneficaries are adults with learning disabilities in the Greater Belfast area. Some members of the Committee are also beneficiaries of the Club but this is considered necessary as the entire purpose is to empower people with learning disabilities to have more say in their lives and gain confidence making decisions. Committee members with learning disabilities are given appropriate support from professionals to discharge their duties effectively as charity trustees avoiding conflict of interests, ensuring that the needs of all beneficiaries and potential future beneficiaries are taken into account when making decisions. (They are supported by staff from the Orchardville Society who specialise in supporting adults with learning disabilities.)

What your organisation does

We are a Club for adults within Greater Belfast with learning disabilities. The Club provides a range of social activities and opportunities to learn life skills. The aim is to ensure that people with learning disabilities are not socially excluded but instead have opportunities to socialise, learn new skills, and take part in the activities within

the community. The Club is supported by Belfast Health and Social Services Trust and has workers from Orchardville Training and Education Centre to assist with its activities. The Club’s users have a key say in deciding upon its programme of activities. The Club encourages those attending its groups to make their own choices and gain the confidence to live more independently. For example specialist help is provided to encourage independent travel and own use of community services and facilities. The ETC Club provides educational and employment advice and provides its users with regular contact with health care professionals such as dieticians and psychologists.
