The direct benefits which flow from purpose one include the preservation and conservation of an historic heritage site known as Ballance House, birth place of John Ballance, political reformer and Prime Minister of New Zealand 1891-93. These benefits are evidenced through feedback from descendants of John Ballance and from historians and visitors
who appreciate the heritage of the area being celebrated and preserved for future generations. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the descendants of John Ballance, the general public, tourists and visitors from Northern Ireland and around the world who come to visit the birthplace of a renowned New Zealand Premier. A private benefit to Trustees may have arisen through gaining experience and knowledge of managing a restoration project. All health and safety regulations are adhered to so that this purpose does not give rise to any harm. The direct benefits which flow from purpose two are the increased education and cultural awareness of the general public in the part played by Ulster men and women in the development of New Zealand during the time of John Ballance’s office. The educational benefit is evidenced through feedback from tourists, visitors, school groups and historical societies who visit Ballance House and learn of the life story and achievements of John Ballance and the enormous contribution he made as a politician in New Zealand. Other Ulster men and women who contributed to the political, social and economic development of New Zealand are also showcased at Ballance House. The enjoyment element is evidenced through comments left in the Visitors Book signed by groups and individuals who enjoy their experience at Ballance House. A private benefit is the Trustees and volunteers also gain knowledge and acquire skills by acting as Tour Guides and catering operatives to the groups and visitors who come to Ballance House.
