Public benefits
Purpose: The main objects for which the society is established are to advance education, in particular for young people, by providing training facilities for the acquisition and development of occupational skills and work experience for periods in each case not exceeding two years. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the
improved provision of training and employability services to those furthest from the workplace (typically young people on benefits, single parents and those experiencing major barriers to gaining employment, education or training), progressions in learning and quality of work, particularly written work. Further direct benefits include improved pastoral care and support arrangements for trainees and apprentices, opportunities to develop occupational skills and wider employability skills. These benefits can be evidenced through feedback of various forms and independent evaluations of our services, for example by the Education and Training Inspectorate whose reports list DYCW highly and state “"Progression rates to further education, training and employment are very good or better for most programmes...there is evidence of progression in their learning...and the quality of directed training is never less than satisfactory. It is good or better in the majority (72%) of the sessions inspected, and is very good or better in 39% of them”. The benefits can further be demonstrated through the success of various programmes in improving numbers gaining employment and other opportunities to progress; one example being, in 2013 our Job Assist programme moved 134 users, who would not otherwise have had the opportunities, to move into employment. The beneficiaries are young people in need of assistance to gain development or employment. There are there no private benefits accruing to any unintended beneficiaries which would more than incidental to the carrying out of the purposes, for example, the gaining of skilled staff by local employers is a necessary by-product of our successes and is incidental to the purposes. There are no harms arising from our purposes.
