Public benefits

Purpose 1: “Assist young people in Dungannon area in the development of their social and personal skills in order to enhance their educational attainment and quality of life”. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include developments and increases in a range of appropriate skills, attitudes and dispositions, including teamwork, motivation

and increased self-confidence, amongst the beneficiaries as well as improvements in physical, emotional and mental well-being. These skills directly lead to educational and work-based progression, for example, from being members to becoming Junior Leaders, Volunteers or eventually paid staff or through achieving success in training courses. Other benefits include access to accredited and non-accredited courses which eventually allow beneficiaries to deliver programmes and learn decision-making skills. Purpose 2: “Encourage parity, understanding, equity and tolerance among the varied communities and cultures in the Dungannon area”. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include a greater awareness amongst the beneficiaries of cultural diversity and inclusion, the strengthening of mutually respectful environments and access to programmes and opportunities which are culturally or socially based. These benefits for both purposes can be demonstrated through first hand records and feedback, for example, young people delivering programmes maintain a file of their learning outcomes and provide self-evaluation on their development. There are also regular assessments carried out on the organisation by public authorities; in the Education and Training Inspectorate’s Report of November 2013, the organisation achieved a grading of ‘very good’ based on criteria of ‘achievements’ and ‘quality’. Many of our beneficiaries have received ‘Volunteer Now’ awards. The beneficiaries are all young people in the Dungannon Area. A particular focus is given to those young people at risk of social exclusion and marginalisation from their peers and the community and attempts are made to ensure membership is representative of the diverse range of culture and nationality in the local community. There are no harms or private benefits to any unintended beneficiaries arising from the purposes.
