Public benefits

Photoworks North seeks to: 1) Develop and promote photography and other lens based media to the general public in the United Kingdom. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: Individuals gain enhanced knowledge about the different types and uses of contemporary and historical photography. Individuals learn about current

photography exhibitions, opportunities and events from the information we provide across our publishing platforms. (In print, on line and through social media.) These benefits will be evidenced by: The annual record kept by us of the number of people who take up the opportunity to access the organisation's free on line archives and resources. The website had 57,300 visits from users from the UK in 2013. By the number of people that the organisation provides information to via its social media channels. In March 2013 we had 22,000 Twitter followers and 6000 Facebook likes. The organisation records and monitors this usage on a regular basis. 2) Encourage appreciation for and participation in the art of photography and other lens based media. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: Individuals learn how to develop their visual awareness and critical analysis of photographs so they have a better understanding and appreciation of photographic culture. Members of the public are provided with direct feedback about their photographs so that they will have a better understanding of the creative processes used in making them. Inspiring members of the public to create better photographs. These benefits will be evidenced by: The regular independent evaluation of our activities through the Arts professionals within The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Arts and Culture Department at Belfast City Council and The Arts Council of Ireland. (Our three main funders). By keeping annual records of the number of people we meet directly with each year to provide feedback on their photographs. By keeping annual records of the number of people who make submissions to us via email of their photographs. 3) Provide and manage facilities for the training of all people and in particular young people who desire to learn photography. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: Individuals are enabled to access free on line learning facilities in the form of 'learning packages' that provide the necessary practical and theoretical material needed to improve their knowledge and picture making skills. The photography education of young people is advanced by providing free copies of our journal Source magazine in schools and by providing information on our website about a wide range of places to study photography. These benefits will be evidenced by: The number of people using the on line learning facilities and the Graduate Photography On Line facility on our web site. By the number of schools who take up the offer of a free subscription to Source. There are no private benefits to people who are not intended beneficiaries from any of our purposes. There is no harm flowing from any of our purposes.

What your organisation does

The Charity publishes a quarterly magazine called Source. This stimulates critical debate about photography through reviews of exhibitions and feature articles on photography and through the publication of portfolios of a range of different photographer’s work. We publish back issue material from Source on our web site www.source.ie all of which is

free to access. This site includes additional features such as audio interviews and short films about photographers’ work. The audio interviews are an in-depth format, recording photographer’s experiences over their lives, to provide an historical understanding of photography. The website also has online learning packages for people wanting to learn more about photography in-depth. We provide free feedback and advice sessions for photographers about their work. These are advertised in advance on our website. We provide a digest of topical news and information about photography via Twitter and Facebook.
