Public benefits
People are enabled to share ideas, improve skills and deepen their knowledge about reminiscence work. The organisation exists to support, develop and expand the use of reminiscence, life story and life review work as a means of promoting well-being. Reminiscence is currently used with a wide variety of client groups e.g. ‘looked after children’,
people with physical disabilities, people with dementia and people with learning disabilities amongst many other groups. A growing body of research supports claims that reminiscence work improves peoples social well-being by valuing their memories. The objects of the Company are restricted to the advancement of education, the promotion, protection and preservation of physical and mental health and wellbeing, the promotion, development and support of those voluntary and community sector organisations offering reminiscence services and support, the relief of sickness and the aged and the promotion of the benefit of the inhabitants within the area of benefit. The current service provision is diverse and varied. The Company seeks to promote and encourage the greater use of reminiscence work to enhance and enrich people’s quality of life and develop the capacity of others to deliver high quality reminiscence work. The company delivers a number of academic skills based courses including the accreditation of RNNI’s training through the Open College Network, the development of a Masters level module in Reminiscence and Life Story Work in partnership with the University of Ulster and an Apprenticeship Scheme with the European Reminiscence Network. The organisation has also developed Reminiscence Loan Boxes which contain everyday objects used as multi-sensory triggers to stimulate memory and activate reminiscence and held a number of information events for the general public. The Company is managed on a voluntary basis by an elected Board of Directors composed of members. Membership of the board is subject to the nomination, appointment, election and co-option process set out in the Company’s memorandum and articles of association. There are no payments (beyond out of pocket expenses) made to the Board of Directors. The Company has a number of paid members of staff who are employed in connection with the delivery of the company’s activities. Benefit of RNNI It is seen that people benefit from reminiscence work by getting to know others, learning from others by sharing their knowledge and skills, learning about and preserving family and community history, appreciating their common experiences and knowledge, developing new social networks and new social skills. Demonstration of this benefit RNNI has been evaluated by Independent Evaluators (funded through Atlantic Philanthropes). They interviewed new trainers, facillitators and beneficiaries of reminiscence work to assess the impact of reminiscence work over a 4 year period i.e. 2009 – 13. They concluded that reminiscence work has very positive outcomes for beneficiaries e.g. - 94% believed that reminiscence had helped them value their memories more - 94% had enjoyed talking about their experiences - 83% believed that reminiscence had made them feel good about themselves - 86% felt they had grown closer to others through reminiscence RNNI’s management of potential harm When people recall their memories of their life experiences, they may recall painful memories of abuse or loss. This is why RNNI prioritise the training of people who want to work with people using reminiscence because RNNI training helps people to further develop their listening and communication skills so that they listen empathically and know how to enable people to work through and reframe their negative experiences. The independent evaluator concluded that reminiscence work is seen to be ‘a positive intervention’.
