Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the purposes will include an increased understanding amongst the public, and in particular schoolchildren, of past educational systems and the experiences of the communities of the surrounding area and their way of life (particularly those of the early 20th century when the building was erected). These benefits

can be demonstrated or evidenced through feedback from visitors in the form of questionnaires and/or entries in the Visitors Book. The direct benefits which flow from the purposes will include greater access to community resources and facilities for events such as art displays, concerts and meetings. These in turn will lead to improved cohesion, integration and interaction amongst the public and particularly amongst the local community. These benefits can be demonstrated or evidenced through feedback from the organisers of local community events. The direct benefits which flow from the purposes will include an encouraged and enhanced appreciation amongst the public of the architectural merits of the Schoolhouse externally as an important feature in an area of particular landscape value and internally through the ingenuity and aptness of the design and layout of the School for pupils and community meetings in early 20th century. These benefits can be demonstrated or evidenced through comments (howsoever obtained) from the public and architectural experts on the merit and beauty of the Building. There are no harms arising out of any of the above purposes and neither are there private benefits to any unintended persons. The beneficiaries for all purposes are the general public.

What your organisation does

The Causeway Memorial School Trust owned a school museum (and grounds) which was previously leased to the Education Authority under a 99 year lease at a nominal rent (a lease which began in 1929). For many years the Trust was inactive, the property being run by the Education Authority originally as a Public Elementary School and in more recent

years as a Sandford Award winning living museum which approximately 3000 school children visited annually. Museum and teaching came to an end in 2013 and the Education Authority expressed a wish to surrender the lease. The Trust negotiated with them on that front, worked to find a suitable new occupant within the terms of the Trust Deed and ultimately decided to transfer ownership of the school to the National Trust by way of cy-pres under s 26(1) of the Charities Act (NI) 2008. The property was formally transferred on 30th August 2019 and the Causeway Memorial School Trust formally closed on 31st December 2019.
