Public benefits

Purpose 1: To advance education in the understanding and appreciation of the Arts by the presentation of theatrical productions. We aim to give people from all areas of the community the opportunity to work in theatre either through volunteering or through Government work schemes. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: - Young

people are better educated in theatre and the arts - More people are receiving vital work experience in theatre - Increased numbers of people getting involved in local events These benefits can be demonstrated through the increased number of young people who have been educated in the arts as a result of our work, and the number of people who have gained experience through their involvement with Belvoir Players Amateur Dramatic Society. We are aware our purpose may lead to harm such as disagreements or hostility between members from different areas of the community. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits as we have had many members of staff from different areas of the community work together peacefully. The main beneficiaries are teenagers and young people who interact with others and gain work experience that will improve their chances of further employment. A private benefit exists through the employment of a small number of staff by the organisation. However, this private benefit is of vital importance to ensure the smooth running of the Society and is incidental. Purpose 2: To promote and develop the performing arts. We aim to provide a space for community and theatre groups in which to run community events and stage performances. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: - Local community theatre groups and organisations continuing to flourish and grow - Groups from all areas of Belfast and Northern Ireland and from across different communities are able to come together to stage events and theatrical performances - An increased number and quality of community arts events or performances are staged These benefits can be demonstrated through feedback from the organisations who use our facilities and the general public. We do not believe there is any possibility of this purpose causing harm. The beneficiaries are local community groups and organisations, local amateur and professional theatre groups and the general public. A private benefit may be gained by community and theatre groups who use our facilities in the form of publicity which could lead to further opportunities elsewhere. This is incidental benefit.

What your organisation does

Our organisation has three principal strands viz. Belvoir Players Adult Drama Group; Belvoir Players Theatre Academy and Belvoir Studio Theatre. The adult drama group rehearse and present performing arts events for the benefit of local audiences and provides opportunities for adult participation. The group meet in the Studio theatre during the

evenings as and when required for rehearsal purposes. We also provide experienced training in theatre skills and employ from time to time professional facilitators for specialised training. The Theatre Academy involves participation for young people to gain experienced training in the performing arts. We offer opportunities to children from 5 years of age up to 18 years of age at which time they graduate to the adult group. This training includes the opportunity to be involved in theatrical productions facilitated by professional instructors in musical accompaniment and in choreography. The Studio Theatre is administered in a voluntary capacity as a community venue for performances and for meetings of a variety of types. It provides a home base for the adult group and for the Academy with modern up-to-date facilities and technical equipment. Overall we provide easy and affordable access to the arts for all in the community.
