Public benefits

The direct public benefits which currently flow from the Association’s purposes are twofold: environmental and economic. This may be demonstrated in the 2 major capital projects we have undertaken since inception in 1990 together with the ongoing work we undertake throughout the year to improve the Village appearance and bring festive cheer at

Christmas. A riverside walk was completed in 2000 while the first phase of our current major project the Maine Business Centre (MBC) opened in 2008 replacing a derelict Police Station. The beneficiaries are the people living in Cullybackey and surrounding rural areas together with the benefits accruing to the tenants of MBC through the availability of local workspace units, turnkey offices and 2 retail units most of which are occupied by startup businesses giving new employment opportunities and hence an economic boost to the area. The current project has brought a number of new services to the village including recreational facilities with both a gym and spin cycle classes as well as a much needed cafe and bookshop. The riverside walk gives pleasure to all age groups and encourages exercise as well as a chance to enjoy the local flora and fauna. Benefits also accrue to the community from the Association’s lobbying activities on matters of local concern. Recent examples have resulted in the completion of a footpath from the village to Ballymena, this having been a safety issue for pedestrians and cyclists and also bringing to the fore the need for a Park & Ride facility to serve the local railway station. Longer term these benefits will contribute to sustainable community regeneration and improved village life.

What your organisation does

Currently our efforts are focussed on the management and operation of Maine Business Centre as we aim to ensure its viability and seek to develop it further as Community needs are identified. We also contribute and participate in environmental aspects of the Village Regeneration Plan. Our most recent contribution has been the erection of 6

decorative lanterns on lamp posts on the bridge over the River Maine with scope to add hanging baskets in season. We are responsible for the provision of festive lighting throughout the village at Christmas while assisting with the upkeep of floral displays in Spring and Summer. We also act as a pressure group on matters of concern to the village and attend meetings and forums further afield when necessary to look after village interests.
