Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the purposes include the reduction in isolation, loneliness, stress and anxiety. Also the opportunity to explore ethical issues and issues of social justice leading to better citizenship; the improvement in access to nutritious, quality food sourced locally, from small producers and with sustainability in mind.

Members experience increased health outcomes from improved nutrition and low incomes stretch further with no decrease in quality of food; increased self-confidence in cooking, budgeting, nutrition, gardening skills, foraging. Increased social capital and improved mental health; and the reduction in isolation, loneliness, stress and anxiety. An increase in joy in the community and in meeting others from different backgrounds. Feedback from community members who choose to attend the community gathering; feed back from members, ongoing surveys and the selections being made for individual shopping baskets; increased involvement of members and member’s feed back; and community feed back and participation in community events. We do not believe any of the purposes will lead to any identifiable harm. These benefits are available to anyone who wishes to join the gathering regardless of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnic origin, political or religious opinion, socio-economic background, ability and/or disability; individuals and families living in East Belfast who sign up as members; and generally people living in East Belfast. No private benefits are expected to flow from the purposes other than the reasonable but not excessive remuneration for staff.

Charitable purposes

4. OBJECTS 4.1. The Charity’s Objects are specifically restricted to the following: 4.1.1. to explore, express, enjoy and engage with the tenets and theology of the Christian faith, primarily though an intentional community gathering currently know as St Christopher’s; and seek to be inclusive, creative, progressive, outward-focused and hospitable, welcoming, caring form and offering support to all within our community and beyond; 4.1.2. to relieve poverty, hunger and financial hardship and promote and preserve good health and wellbeing of those in need by: 4.1.2.1. provision of emergency food supplies; and 4.1.2.2. advocating on their behalf to ensure they receive and access support they need from statutory bodies and other agencies; 4.1.3. to increase community capacity through working with local residents and other organisations in promoting, providing and facilitating community capacity building and community development programmes and projects, to enhance the abilities, skills and self-confidence of individuals in need and the wider community to allow them to reach their full potential; and 4.1.4. to promote social inclusion and decrease isolation through working in partnership and engaging with the community and other organisations in the provision of community events and activities with the aim of brining the community together. Nothing in the articles shall authorise an application of the property of the Charity for purposes which are not charitable in accordance with s.2 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.
