Public benefits
The Direct benefits that flow from the purpose are the advancement, enjoyment and enhanced understanding of the Arts and in particular music and Musical Theatre for the benefit of the General Public of Northern Ireland. The Company draws its membership from all parts of the community irrespective of religion or sexual orientation. As well as
educating the public, it also educates its membership, encouraging members to take on roles, both onstage and backstage, which will develop their individual skills ensuring a collective result which may then be enjoyed by the wider public. Guidance and training are also provided in relation to backstage skills- staging, costume, makeup and props. These benefits can be evidenced in record of public attendance at shows and concerts and public feedback following these. The education aspect is in the personal development of younger members and in all who participate in performing but also in the organisation skills which are associated in the production of all events. There is no harm arising from the purpose of Belfast Operatic Company. The charities beneficiaries are the general public of Northern Ireland in their enjoyment and enhanced understanding of the Arts and in particular music and Musical Theatre and the members of the company in relation to education and development of their skills associated with singing, performing and in the organisation and production of musical events. Some private benefit is obtained by the director/choreographer of staged shows in the form of one-off fees for the provision of their services, and by participating local musicians obtaining exposure to larger audiences. The director and choreographer are not employees or trustees and as their services and those of the musicians are essential to enable Belfast Operatic Company to deliver education in all areas of performance art to its beneficiaries, it is completely incidental.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
Belfast Operatic Company carries out its purpose by staging a number of concerts and shows throughout the year for the benefit of the general public in Northern Ireland. Members of the company are provided with both group and individual education in relation to the performing arts more specifically musical theatre. We do not have a business plan as
such but we plan a number of concerts throughout the year and a show which is normally set in the Grand Opera House in Belfast. This has obviously been a difficult year due to Covid 19 restrictions but if all goes according to plan we will have an outdoors concert in Magheramorne Estate at the end of June, a production of A Christmas Carol in the Opera House in November and a Christmas Concert in the Ulster Hall in December. We will obviously be able to more fully develop future plans when/if restrictions are relaxed.
