Public benefits

Benefits flowing from the Club's purposes are: Increased participation in sport of weightlifting in Newtownabbey area and further afield in Northern Ireland. Increase in individual strength and conditioning and associated health benefits. Improvement in standard of weightlifting by providing qualified coaches. Preparation of members for

competitions up to Commonwealth Games standard. Assisting members to enter competitions in United Kingdom and further afield by providing technical help and financial assistance where required. Arrangement of courses to assist members to qualify as technical officials and coaches. Providing an environment suitable for all ages and abilities including those with disabilities. Benefits are demonstrated by: Feedback from members. Retention of members. Increase in technical ability of individuals and constant assessment by coaches. Increases in standards achieved individually within the club and at competitions. Increase in numbers achieving qualified coaching status. British Weightlifting Database publishing competition results and records. British Weightlifting awards published for outstanding coaches. Members recognised and funded by Sports Trusts. Amount of social interaction within the membership. Weightlifting is a sport like most others where injury can occur but this is minimised by supervision and training given by qualified coaches and strict health and safety policies. The benefits of weightlifting far outweigh any harm. Peer reviews have shown weightlifting is safer than many other sports, and including participation at school age. The beneficiaries are the members who join the club and are all ages and from all backgrounds. Any private benefits are purely incidental. Members who achieve coaching qualifications may be able to use this in furtherance of some other career in sport.

What your organisation does

The Club is based at a venue in Newtownabbey but attracts members from a much wider area. It has been set up specifically to cater for the amateur sport of Olympic Weightlifiing. It is open to all ages and all abilities from absolute beginners. All coaches are British Weightlifting qualified and registered and each member is provided with training

programme to suit them. Members can use this for general fitness, to assist strength and conditioning for other sports or to concentrate on weightlifting up to Commonwealth Games Standard. All members become British Weightlifting registered and are encouraged to participate in competitions to suit their ability.
